ROBERT LOWREY Obituary

LOWREY, ROBERT 1945 - 2017 It is with much sorrow that we announce the tragic and sudden passing of Robert Lowrey during the late hours of December 25th. Rob had a great love of family and leaves behind his loving wife, Kim, of 35 years and dearest daughter Katie. Rob will be missed by his sister Sylvia Christensen, whom he adored and her family. His Arizona cousins, Joanne Schust and Richard Schust and their families, the Smith family and Kim's brother, Garry Hewitt and family, as well as many cousins, nieces and nephews. It was Rob's hope to travel to western Canada and Britain to meet and visit family there along with his wife and daughter and search out his dear mother's original home near Blundell Sands, England. Rob's keen interest in all things allowed him to speak with anyone regarding any topic, whether it was sports, politics, literature, history, music or the arts. He had an extensive knowledge of all these subjects but at the same time he was humble and had a way with people, which put them at ease. He was extremely thoughtful, sensitive, articulate and witty and took joy teasing those with whom he was closest. He loved his dogs, whom he walked or cross-country skied with every morning and could not sleep at night until he knew the birdfeeders were filled for the morning birds. Rob had a very strong work ethic and in the early years helped his father with piano tunings, which led him to begin fixing pianos in the garage of his mother's Leaside home four decades earlier. He struggled for many years to establish a retail store and workshops, which have now become one of Canada's largest and most successful piano retail facilities. He will be missed by all his business associates and especially his long term employees at Robert Lowrey's Piano Experts, in Toronto, where he spent much of his life. There will be no funeral held at this time; however a memorial/celebration of life will take place some time in the next few months with an announcement of dates forthcoming. Rob's many friends, whom he loved, will deeply miss him, but we will carry him in our hearts and memories always.

I was shocked and terribly saddened when I called the store on January 27th asking for Robert and learned of his sudden passing in December. Robert was a kind, gentle, caring and generous man who was a huge supporter of the arts and of PAL Canada Foundation of which I am the Executive Director. He was a dear friend who will be missed terribly by so many in the music community. He was always there for us in any big or small way that he could. He never hesitated to support a worthy cause and was quick to show support for my BackFortMac concert at Roy Thomson Hall in June of 2016. I extend my sincere condolences to his wife and daughter and his entire family, on my behalf, and on behalf of all members of PAL Canada Foundation. May he rest in peace.

My sincere sympathy to Kim and Katie. I hope that the love of friends will offer some comfort in this time. Rob was a close friend at LHS and I have great memories of our friendship and antics. When we connected later in life, it was like we had only missed a few days.

When we spoke last, for a brief (more than 2 hours!) chat when I dropped into the shop, his love for wife, daughter and of course the dogs worked its way into the conversation.

Rob was a loving, generous and joyful person. I will miss him.

Kind, honorable, humble. Retailer. Somehow he was all four, selling fine pianos, rebuilding pianos, and helping the Toronto arts community at every turn. This is a sad day; we will miss him.

We have known the Lowrey family since we first moved to Leaside. They were wonderful neighbours! Rob's name became synonymous with pianos-he was always the first one to call for help or advice when it came to pianos!
We always enjoyed our little chats whenever we met on Bayview Avenue. Our sincere condolences to the family.
