Robert Quick Obituary

ROBERT T. QUICK Bob passed away quietly on Tuesday, March 22, 2011, at Toronto's Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre, leaving his parents Constance and Edison, his fiancée Allison and her children Adriana and Sam, his brother David and nieces Theresa and Laura, his brother Douglas (Diane) and nephews Alex and Andrew. Two weeks ago many lifelong friends gave Bob a living memorial in Leaside, where he grew up. An outstanding athlete in school sports including hockey, baseball, track and football, 'Quickie' was cherished by his friends, who marveled at his agility to co-ordinate social gatherings of Leasiders whatever the occasion. This time it was their turn and Bob had the time of his life. As a member of the Fort York Guard of the 1970s, Bob became a stalwart of 1812 period battle drills and honour guards, and served as historical interpreter to Fort visitors, including thousands of schoolchildren. A former Guard Commander, Bob led efforts for the glittering Fort York reunion of 2003. Bob had a successful career as a residential and commercial property assessor and held the Associate designation from the Institute of Municipal Assessors (AIMA). A passionate defender of Canada's natural heritage, Bob parlayed his expertise with official plans and local bylaws to sound the alert, in 2008, on a proposed massive redevelopment of 800 acres of Muskoka wilderness. Conservationists won the day. The family will receive friends at the HUMPHREY FUNERAL HOME -- A.W. MILES CHAPEL, 1403 Bayview Avenue (south of Davisville Avenue) from 1:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, March 27, 2011. In Bob's memory, donations to the Princess Margaret Hospital Foundation, 610 University Avenue, Toronto M5G 2M9 or Toronto East General Hospital Foundation, 825 Coxwell Avenue, Toronto M4C 3E7 would be appreciated. Condolences and memories may be forwarded through www.humphreymiles.com 'None so fair as can compare ...'

My deepest condolences to Bob's family and loved ones. Bob and I were never close friends and I hadn't seen him in recent years, but I am very glad to have known him. He remains one of the people I remember best from LHS, an intelligent, witty, generous, and kind person. A fine gentleman who, I remember, looked damned fine in his 1812 British army officer's uniform. I am so sad that he is gone.

I am thinking of the last time we spent time together and I am reminded of Brutus' words to his men prior to the final battle in Julius Caesar,
"If we do meet again, why, we shall smile ; if not, why, then, this parting was well made." Glad to have shared the road with you sir.

Bob Lister taught Robert at Bessborough P. S. many years ago. We, Bob and Lis, remember attending a grade 8 dance and seeing Robert enjoying the event with his class-mates. I even shared a dance with him. As well, when I was a nurse at Sunnybrook, I had the pleasure of looking after him after he had had his appendix removed. I remember giving him ice chips because he was parched from the “No food by mouth” orders. Later, I learned that these ice chips had "saved his life". We share these memories as we remember Robert (Bob), a very personable and likable young man.
Blessings,
Bob and Lis Lister [email protected]

My deepest sympathy to Bob's family and loved ones. Bob had such a good spirit. I have many cherished memories of him during the LHS years and later on. His smile could light up a room.

One of the best, Quickie always included me in any of his pal's gatherings. We all have our Leaside groups, but in Bob's case, I think he belonged in all of our gangs. I miss him already.

When I think of my youth in Leaside and the fun and adventurous get-togethers I think of Bob... calm, witty, athletic, always a sly grin on his face. He was part of the glue that bonded us Leasiders through our adult lives... a keeper of the flame. Rest in peace Bob.

I played hockey for a season with Bob on the Leaside Kings team and he was "Quick" as they say on the ice (we'll faster than me anyway). Lots of fond memories of a gentleman that will be missed.

Bob was my student at Leaside. I coached him in Rugby and in Drama and he showed remarkable talent in both. We have remained friends since. Being in Bob's company was a fun and enjoyable experience; he enriched the lives of his friends with his personality and good cheer and he will be missed by all who knew him.. Nicholas Mitchell

May the love of friends and family carry you through your grief.

Bob and I grew up in the community of Leaside. Crossing paths through many mutual activities and friends. Once we left the hallowed halls of LHS, and found ourselves at McMaster those paths became closer. He never faulted in knowing that we were family away from home. As the years progressed, that bond that we all feel for each other was kept alive by Bob. His desire to stay in touch and to have his community of friends near.
Quickie taught us the value of friendship, something we all need to acknowledge in our chaotic lives. Thank you Bob. Brownie
