ROBIN KOVES Obituary

KOVES, ROBIN REYBURN KIRKPATRICK Robin Koves' life ended, on March 22, 2023, at the age of 66, after a 30-year battle arising out of Polycystic Kidney Disease. She was born on August 23, 1956, in Buffalo, NY, before immigrating to Toronto, Canada, where she put down roots and raised her family. Robin was a devoted wife and best friend to her husband, Robert, and a proud mother to her children, Jacky and Lex. She was overjoyed to see them find happiness with their partners, Matt and Sarah. Robin was also a doting grandmother ("Marmee") to Freya, Virginia, Lander, and Simon, and cherished every moment spent with them. Robin loved family and arranged get togethers for all occasions. Whenever possible, this included sisters, brothers, cousins, and grandparents. Robin was an avid game player. She met her husband, Robert, over a backgammon board. She loved a rousing game of "Oh Hell" and was the best trivia player in the family. In addition to her role as a mother and homemaker, Robin was a key participant in the daily operation of the family business. Robin contributed much time to PEO Chapter B, a local chapter of an organization that supports women's education, as well as Hopewell Gardens, a community gardening club, acting as the "Permanent" Treasurer for both organizations. Robin is survived by her sisters, Melanie and Holly; as well as her husband, children, nieces, nephews, cousins, and many friends. She will forever be in our hearts. A Reception in Robin's honour will be held on Saturday, April 1st, from 3-5 p.m. at Mount Pleasant Cemetery in Toronto. Memorial donations may be made to one of the following: PEO Chapter B 1. Donations by E-Transfer can be made to [email protected] 2. By cheque to "PEO SISTERHOOD CHAPTER B" mailed to Jane Hatton, ChB Treasurer, Box 761, Niagara on the Lake, L0S 1J0 Hopewell Gardens 1. I was a friend of Robin's since high school. We were not the hang out every day type. We seemed to meet up at critical times in our lives. We shared many things. I remember when she met you Robert. She was so very happy. Her love of music played an important part in her and my life. She was the one who got us tickets to see Bruce Springsteen at Shea's Theater. I talk about that all the time. I am now on concert #10. In the last Christmas card I got from her she asked me if I had listened to his Magic album. She was also responsible for one of my first dates with my husband. She was working at Harvey & Corkey and got me 2 floor seats to see Billy Joel. We were terrible at writing so there was few correspondence, but when i got a note from her i was always happy. I sent a Christmas card last year but i may have sent it to the wrong address. I thought of her often and always wanted to get to Toronto to visit.

Ilona and I first met Robin in 1984 when on assignment in Toronto. Then, as ten years later, when our family permanently settled, she welcomed us with open arms and did everything to make our transition to Toronto life easier. Thank you, Robin, for the chats, for the theatre and movie visits, the games and (even?) the decades of choosing family christmas gifting partners.

We made a contribution in memory of Robin to the PEO Sisterhood.

I met Robin through Hopewell community garden. She was a soft spoken gentle soul with an open heart. We had some lovely conversations sitting in the garden on a summers day. I will remember her.

Speaking not just from myself but also my brother Dave and best friend Phil Snyder, the Kirkpatrick family were the best neighbors you could ever want. We all grew up with Robin and her sisters, to be honest, Robin felt more like a sister to us not just a friend. When the Kirkpatrick family had their annual summer movie night in the backyard, Robin made sure we were all coming. When the guys would play basketball and Robins sister Holly would usually be better than all of us , Robin would come and cheerlead. I can´t recall if she cheered for the guys or her sister. During summer nights we routinely played a game of Monster Moodoo, the game was literally like freeze tag. Robin was always a big help in this game, she made sure she would unfreeze us. Most importantly Robin came from a great family, you always knew what a great person she would always be. Robin was a very good listener you could talk to her about anything,. This comes back to the point about her being more like a sister. Robin also played a huge role in the Kirkpatrick girls scaring us guys at the best house you could ever go to for Halloween. I think Robin tipped us off in advance on what to expect, I guess she didn´t want us to get to scared. In summing things up, Robin could be friends with everyone , but as to being a neighbor she was more like a sister. We all love you Robin may you RIP.

I am very sad to read this news about Robin. Robin was that rare kind of person, decent, kind and always dignified. I got to know Robin through our shared involvement with the Hopewell Community Garden (although we have been neighbours living in the same building a few doors away from each other for several years). I really enjoyed talking with her about plants and gardening and her involvement with PEO. She briefly mentioned her illness on a few occasions, but even that difficult burden she carried with a quiet dignity. I shall miss seeing her in our building and in the garden. Alistair and I extend our deepest condolences to Robert and their family.
