Rollit GOLDRING Obituary

GOLDRING, Rollit James It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Rollit James Goldring (1937 - 2017) at Sunnybrook Hospital on October 31st. Words cannot describe the anguish of losing such a strong force of love and kindness in this world. Beloved partner of Cathy Carson and adoring caregiver to his dog, Abby. Loving father of Paul (Carolyn), Julie (Alex) and Mark (Nicki). Loving Grandpa to Adam, Ryan, Sarah, Jamie, Samantha, Allyson and Avery. Brother of the late Nancy Goldring. A caring step-father to Drew and Tyler. Fondly remembered by Ann Goldring. Rolly was a dear friend to many neighbours, teammates and colleagues. Rolly was a dedicated educator and a visionary who had a long and successful career with the Scarborough Board of Education. His passion for sports was lifelong, including playing basketball in the 1964 Olympics representing Canada and the tennis game he was winning last Friday when he suffered a catastrophic stroke. The family wishes to thank the staff at Sunnybrook Health Centre for their exceptional care and support. A Celebration of Life will take place on Friday, November 10, 2017 from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. at Toronto Hunt Club, 1355 Kingston Road, Scarborough, ON. Cremation has taken place. Rolly's final resting place will be at his beloved cottage. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre or the World Wildlife Fund. At this late date in November 2018, I'm shocked and saddened by Rollys passing. I had the pleasure of knowing Rolly and Cathy at the Guildwood Tennis club, and both were and are a pleasure to know. Rolly was very humble, a real gentleman and a great competitor. I have known some great people thru that tennis and Rolly was certainly one of them. My apologies for finding this so late, I have been away from tennis. Sincere condolences to you Cathy and family. I hope you are doing well, but I know you many memories of a great partner. I am happy to have known him.

He was a wonderful teacher and very well respected by all the students during my term at WCCI (1960-1965). Loved his Zoology class. Along with Mr. Leyshon, Mr. Thomas, Mrs. Roth and lots of others, he shaped so many lives. RIP Mr. Goldring.

Many, many people will gather to celebrate the life of this man but many more who cannot be present will have known him as a teacher, a coach, an administrator and a mentor. No matter how busy, Rollit Goldring could find time to listen. In my time in the Scarborough Program Department and much later as doctoral student and a principal he was and remains for me a source of inspiration.

Mr. Goldring was my basketball coach at Winston Churchill and later became my principal. He was the best coach I ever had. Many lessons learned from his guidance. My greatest memory was going to a party at his home to celebrate our championship with the team. Another memory was when I got injured in a basketball game one Saturday afternoon while being his team mate and he personally took me to the hospital. He will be greatly missed. Rest in Peace Mr. Goldring.

My first memory of Rolly was when we played softball together at Birchcliff Public School. We were on the same team and took turns pitching. Rolly was the stronger thrower but a little wild. We did not win the championship.

As a student, Rolly was my teacher; as a teacher, my principal; as a member of Scarborough's Program Department, he was my Superintendent. I have always found him to be a caring, sincere, compassionate, wise professional. He was gifted in so many areas of his life yet was modest and unassuming. Although serious at heart, he had a mischievous twinkle in his eye which he exhibited during his stints as "Marryin Sam" at WCCI's Sadie Hawkins dances during the 1960s. As a superb educator, he made a difference to a countless number of lives and will live on in the hearts of thousands through his teachings and example. I consider myself extremely lucky to have known him. RIP.

Rollit was a tour de force Superintendent at the Scarborough Board of Education during the late 1970s and into the 1980s. He truly cared about children and about education. I appreciated his support as a trustee, especially when it came to abolishing the use of the strap, i.e., corporal punishment, in the schools at a time when many people still believed that if you spare the rod, you spoil the child. He will not be forgotten!

Rolly's lifelong contribution to the development of basketball in the Toronto area will be long remembered by all.
I only wish that the young kids signing their multi million dollar NBA contracts appreciate the efforts of people like Rolly that kept basketball alive and well from the 1950's on to make their futures possible.
Never a team mate always a friend.

Shocked to hear the news of one of my favourite people. Our many squash games at the Scarborough Y seem like yesterday as does the pleasure of working with Rolly professionally at the SBE. His leadership in the Program Dept. was so helpful to my role in Media Services and I know that many staff and students benefited from all he accomplished in his varied career. Perhaps the peak was his performance in "The Full Monty" at Rick Graham's retirement . . . Condolences to the family. Rolly will not be forgotten.

Rolly was my friend, teammate, tennis partner and mentor. We played many basketball tournaments here in North America and in Europe. One thing we always did was take our tennis racquets so we could play a game or two. My condolences to his family. My heart access with you. Mike Kirkpatrick

I knew Rollit in a number of capacities-first as a student and as a teacher in Scarborough. He always tried to do his best for students and teachers in all capacities. He was instrumental in helping form the basis for the philosophy of caring within the Scarborough Board over many, many years. He was sincere, respectful and decent-I will think about him always in these words.

Mr. Goldring was my principal at WCCI in the late 60s and early 70s. He never taught me in the classroom but taught me many lessons in life. He took the time to know many of his students personally. I used a lot of the lessons he taught me back then in my 32 years as a teacher myself. I had the pleasure of meeting Paul and Mark, in the 80s, while on a whitewater paddling trip on the Petawawa River at Lake Traverse. I told them then and I still mean it today when I say that he had an incredible influence in my life. I know he was held in high esteem by everyone he was associated with. When he left Churchill to open L'Amoreaux Collegiate most of his staff wanted to join him. He was instrumental in many of the programs implemented in our education system during his time. A true leader. It is with great sadness that I happened upon reading his obituary. Rest in peace Mr Goldring. You will be truly missed.

Rollit was my PE teacher at WCCI more than 50+ years ago and he taught me to be strong even when things were not going well. He was a fantastic teacher, great administrator and major influence in my life as a strong supporter of, and later volunteer at, the Board Archives. Without his guidance and encouragement many of us would not be where we are today. RIP Rolly, you will be missed by the thousands who have had the fortune of learning from you, working with you and knowing you as the kind, compassionate and influential person you were.

I became familiar with a man named Rolly Goldring back in 1963 when I was 19 and playing basketball for a London team, 5 B Sports. As mentioned in the obit, Rolly and the Dow Kings of Toronto won the series and went to the 1964 Olympics. In the next 42 years I became familiar with his great contribution to education in Scarborough and his love of basketball. Peter Misikowetz.

I had the privilege of working with Rolly as his secretary in Personnel and in Program. He had such a giving and thoughtful spirit and taught us all so much. Rolly was also appreciated by the Business Employees as he let us know how important a role we played in the World of Education.
He started a June Club for his former secretaries and every year he would invite mystery guests - a way of keeping in touch with former colleagues. He will be deeply missed.
My sincere condolences to Cathy and his children. Rest in Peace Rolly.

Rolly Goldring taught me science at Winston Churchill Collegiate Institute in the early 1960s. He was also my football coach. Among my special memories was speaking with him in 1964 as he prepared for Canada's Olympic basketball team. The first game Canada played in Tokyo was against the Soviet Union, a team that included my uncle. Defying the Cold War barriers, these two Olympians exchanged personal and private best wishes. Upon Rolly's return to Canada, I was grateful for his kind comments and insights. Decades later at the WCCI school reunion, I remained in awe of this special teacher and friend, as he took to the basketball court once more.

With condolences to the family.
