ROMAN MELNYK July 5, 1941 - October 3, 2012 It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Roman Peter Melnyk on October 3, 2012, following an unexpected and brief struggle with cancer. His end came peacefully, surrounded by family. Loving husband, best friend and soulmate of Tania for 42 years; wonderful, funny and supportive father of daughters Marichka (Matt) and Melanie (John); proud and doting Dziadzio to Will and Katya. Survived by his mother Bronyslawa, brother Andrew (Chrystyna), sister-in-law Dana Boyko (Roman), nephews Mark (Kristine) and Roman (Tammy), grandnieces Anya, Ava and Julia and all whose lives he touched in his inimitable and charming way. Roman Melnyk was a lawyer and former television executive. He held several senior positions with the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, including Senior Legal Counsel, Director of Independent Production, Director of TV Network Programming and Executive Director of Media Operations. Later he served as Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of W.F. Cooke Television Programs, then as Vice President of Business Affairs with CTV Television. Prior to pursuing legal studies, from 1962 to 1966 Roman was posted to Stuttgart and Cologne, Germany as a foreign service officer with the Department of Citizenship and Immigration. Roman believed firmly in the need for involvement and commitment to one's community. He served for over a decade on the Board of the St. Demetrius Development Corporation, including four years as its Chair. He was a founding director of the Ukrainian Catholic Education Foundation and served on the Boards of the Independent Production Fund, the Canadian Race Relations Foundation, the National Catholic Broadcasting Council and the International Media Centre in Kyiv, Ukraine. Roman was a law school classmate (U of Toronto, 1969) and we crossed paths from time to time over the years. I remember him as a fine and generous person and send my sympathies to his wife and family.

Roman was a professional and a gentleman. He was always impecably dressed but his warm smile meant that he never seemed stiff or remote.
He was a guy who would negotiate hard but you always knew that he had the confidence, vision and ethical foundation to get what everyone needed. His handshake really meant something.
Roman set a fabulous example and he made an immense and important contribution to the broadcasting industry.

It's Thanksgiving today and it seems appropriate to give thanks for Roman's life. He had many great virtues, but above all else, Roman was a trusted advisor at work and in the community as well as the consumate Family Man. He touched us all and made us better. I worked with Roman for several years at the CBC and had international travel with him when I ran Marketing and Sales. These were my best business trips because of Roman. God bless you Roman and Bon Voyage on your journey to Heaven. I suspect you will continue to be a trusted advisor there. My heartfelt condolences to Tania, his Daughters and Family.

Roman was a great guy, and good friend to me, and many in the broadcast industry. Professionally, he had a common sense, practical approach to issues that made his counsel always valuable. He also saw the humour in whatever he faced, which helped those around him deal with what they faced too. I will miss him, his constant support, and his characteristic laugh. He was a gift to all of us who knew him. My sincere condolences to his family.

Roman was not only a help in my life with advice with my career aspirations, but he and his family always brought me a laugh whenever we met up. It is truly tragic but if anyone can work through this it is Tanya and family. The bond that all of the Melnyk's have has always been something I've admired. He'll be missed.
