RONALD McCALLUM Obituary

RONALD W. McCALLUM, MD Professor Emeritus, University of Toronto (1926 - 2015) Devoted husband for sixty-three years to Mary, beloved father of Fiona and proud grandfather of John and Stephen. Predeceased in 2011 by his beautiful daughter Heather, whom he adored. He will be sadly missed by his loving wife and family in Toronto and by his three brothers Alistair, Graham and Kenneth and their families in the UK. He will also be missed by his many friends and colleagues, as became evident in recent weeks. In his 89th year, after a long and fulfilling life, Ron died on March 20, 2015. Born in Windsor, Canada, of Scottish parents, they returned to Scotland where he grew up. In WWII, he volunteered for the Royal Navy (1943-1948) and trained as a Navy Pilot, during which time he met the love of his life Mary, whom he married in 1952. After graduating in Medicine at the University of Glasgow in 1955, he completed ten years in General Practice in Essex, England. He returned to Canada with his wife and two daughters in 1966 to specialize in Radiology and was trained at St. Michael's Hospital between 1967 and 1970. In 1976, he wrote the authoritative book on Urological Radiology of the Adult Male Lower Urinary Tract. He subsequently authored many papers on the topic. He remained as a staff radiologist at St. Michael's until 1986, when he was appointed Radiologist-in-Chief. He was proud to bring the first MRI to St. Michael's Hospital, which was also among the first in the city. An author and teacher, he was frequently invited as a guest speaker at National and International Radiology and Urology meetings. He was appointed as a Professor at the University of Toronto and became a visiting Professor in North America, Europe, Australia and Japan. He was appointed Professor Emeritus, University of Toronto in 1991 and retired from full-time Radiology in 1994. He continued working part time until 2006 and volunteered teaching until 2010. He loved his work and was dedicated to St. Michael's. In accordance with his wishes, cremation has taken place. A "Celebration of his Life" for family, friends and colleagues will be held in the chapel at Humphrey Funeral Home, 1403 Bayview Ave., Toronto, ON, M4G 3A8, on Saturday, March 28, 2015 at 1 p.m. If desired, in lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his name to St. Michael's Hospital Foundation, 30 Bond St., Toronto, M5B 1W8. We would like to thank the many nurses and doctors who so thoughtfully cared for him over the past few months. 'Tis sad to me to leave this earthly heaven, for I found heaven nowhere else but here, with Mary, Heather, Fiona, John and Stephen and with good friends' --Ron McCallum

Fiona,
I was very saddened to hear the news about your father. I have thought of you many times over the years and sorry that we lost touch. I have many fond memories of the time spent with you and your family. Your parents were always so kind and generous. I am very sorry for your tremendous loss, and I wanted you to know that I am thinking of you, your family and your mom. I hope we are able to get back in touch with each other.

I have wonderful memories of Dr. McCallum's educational and exceptionally entertaining weekly Uroradiology rounds. His dazzling array of TB, XGP, renal masses on IVPs and urethral pathology on his trademark dynamic retrograde voiding cystourethrograms remain indelibly imprinted in my mind even now, 25 years after completing my training. Dr. McCallum was truly one in a million. He will be missed and never forgotten.

Ron MCCallum was an icon in the Department of Medical Imaging and at St. Michael's Hospital. It is impossible to imagine how many lives he touched and changed for the better.

Ron was my teacher, colleague and friend and largely responsible for my career at SMH.

If all the 'thank you's and remembrances were pieced together they would surely circumnavigate the Sun. Ron was the ultimate radiologic and individual star.

Ron was a true visionary. He made his professional mark as a formidable icon in academic radiology and was a truly remarkable leader, mentor, teacher and friend. He remained an important advisor and honorary member of the Department of Medical Imaging at St. Michael's Hospital until his passing last week. We will all miss him very much. My sincere condolences to Mary, Fiona and the family.

Dr. McCallum was a fanastic and humourous teacher. I was one of the senior residents that he came back from retirement to teach in 2009 to prepare for our board exams and I will remember this fondly. I extend my sincere condolences to his family.

It was an honour and privilege to have had the opportunity to be taught by Dr. McCallum. His knowledge and passion were evident throughout every session we had with him. I remember fondly how he always livened up his rounds with his wry but caring sense of humour. The man was like his many examples of classic radiological diagnoses: once seen, never forgotten. Rest in peace, Sir.

Such an incredibly smart, vibrant, and kind teacher and person - he will be greatly missed. It will be such a loss for future Toronto residents to miss out on his legendary lunchtime teaching rounds - anytime I think of the drooping lily or cobra signs I will remember Dr MCallum!

My deepest sympathies to his family, and my even deeper gratitude for his diagnostic skills. Out of several doctors, he was the one whom discovered I had Ulcerative Colitis. I owe him so much, I just pray he's happy, at peace, and reunited with his daughter, God bless
