ROSS DEAKIN Obituary

DEAKIN, ROSS W. 1931 - 2021 Survived by his son Brent Deakin (wife Sara Durning), daughters Michelle Deakin, and Shelley Riggs (nee Deakin) (husband Terry Riggs). Grandchildren: Matt Riggs, Ben Hamilton, Sabina Hamilton, Liam Deakin, Shea Deakin. Brother-in-law to Jim Fairbairn and predeceased by his sister-in-law, Linda Fairbairn (deceased). Dad had an interesting life. Lived in Toronto and Pickering in his youth and adult life. As a boy, he delivered eggs into Toronto with his father Ben Deakin, while his mother, Edith Deakin providing the bookkeeping, and his sister Shirley Saunders (nee Deakin) being the big sister she was. Went to Baseline School and Danforth Tech. Played football for Danforth Tech, Balmy Beach and had try-outs with the Hamilton Wildcats of the CFL - where he cracked his tailbone and thus surgically removed, so his football days were over. Dad served a 6 year apprenticeship after high school as a Watchmaker at the T. E. Eaton Co. This fine tool expertise got him a position at Lucas Rotax where he worked on the fuel pump of the Avro Arrow. After the Avro's cancellation, Dad got into the sales and product design in the plastics industry for food packaging, Canadian and US military items, etc., and worked for various manufacturers and later as self-employed. Dad was also locally politically active and was a Councilor for Pickering Township 1961- 1963, Planning Board in 1966, School Board Trustee in 1972. Community volunteer time with the local hockey league as an assistant coach and hockey convenor. Dad finally retired at age 85. Dad was a great father, husband, and grandfather. We miss you already.

Condolences from the officers and members of Doric Lodge No. 424. Pickering. Ross joined our lodge on October 17, 1957. After the death of his wife Dolores in 2019 he was able to participate regularly at our meetings until they were shut down by the pandemic. Farewell to a true gentleman.

The world has lost a kind, caring and true gentleman who was always ready to help anyone who needed it. We really enjoyed the many evenings spent dancing and having fun with Ross and Delores. We miss him but will treasure our memory of such wonderful years.

My sincere condolences to the Deakin Family. Ross always spoke so highly of his children and grandchildren that I feel that I know everybody personally. Ross was a true gentleman and it was certainly a pleasure to know him.

My husband and I met Dolores and your dad many years ago at square dancing. we both lost our spouses but did continue our friendship and a group of the "dancers" would meet for lunch periodically and it was always fun when we got together. My condolences to the family.

My condolences on the passing of Ross Deakin. My father, Jack Deakin, (who passed in 2005), also worked on the Avro Arrow and was also a Mason. Funny coincidence. I'm not sure if we're related. My Dad's family was from the West Midlands area of England. I've done extensive research into the Deakin family tree. Has anyone in your family done the same? Perhaps we have some common ancestors.
