ROSS KENNEDY Obituary

KENNEDY, B.Com, LLB, ROSS LIVINGSTON July 18, 1935 – January 20, 2020 Ross died peacefully at home surrounded by his family after several years of declining health. He will be greatly missed by his beloved wife of over 60 years Ann (nee Shepherd) and his 4 wonderful children, Frances Reinholdt, John (Brenda), Robert (Pamela), and Paul (Kathleen Ritchie). He cherished his 8 grandchildren Andrew Reinholdt (Amanda Montague), Katie Reinholdt (Ian Knowles), and Nicholas Reinholdt, Ryan Kennedy (Shannon), and Rachel Kennedy, Grace Kennedy, and Elizabeth and Alexandra Kennedy. He took great delight in his great-grandson Peter Montague Reinholdt. He is also survived by his older brother Arthur A. Kennedy and his brother-in-law and sister-in-law Paul and Marilyn Shepherd and 4 nephews. Ross graduated from University of Toronto with a Bachelor of Commerce and LLB. After being called to the Bar in 1962, he practiced law with his father and brother in the firm Kennedy and Kennedy until its merger in 1976 with Tory Tory DesLauriers and Binnington. He specialized in commercial and residential real estate and estate planning. Following his retirement from Torys in 2000, he became counsel to Kagan Shastri as well as working closely with Clark Farb Fiksel. In his more than 50 years of practice, he enjoyed mentoring many young lawyers and law clerks, some of who became close friends. Concurrent with his practice of law, he spent many years as a respected Labour Arbitrator in Ontario and was a member of the National Academy of Arbitrators. Ross loved many forms of music and was proud to serve as a Life Governor of the Corporation of Massey Hall and Roy Thomson Hall, serving on the building committee during the construction of RTH. He also sat on the Board of the Toronto Symphony Orchestra from 1986 to 2000. Following his sons' interest in hockey, he was active in the North Toronto Hockey Association, serving as President and then on the North Toronto Arena Board as Vice Chairman. Ross loved having family around be it small dinners or more special events and he especially loved time with them all at the family cottage at Bayfield Inlet on Georgian Bay. The family is grateful to his caregiver Christine Lloyd for her faithful and loving support for the last 2 years. In lieu of flowers, donations to one of the following would be appreciated. Toronto Symphony Orchestra: TSO.CA/Donate or the Barbara Schliffer Clinic, 489 College St., Toronto, ON, M4G 1A5. Dear Ann,

I was very saddened by the news of Ross' death. I first met Ross when I entered South Prep school as a Grade 7 student and I soon came to appreciate and value his friendship. He, John Simpson and I would be in the same class for the next four years during which time we would enjoy many school and social activities together. At the end of Grade 10 at Forest Hill Collegiate I moved to California and although I didn't have the opportunity to interact with Ross very much after that, Anne and I remember with much fondness attending your wedding reception at Casa Loma. To you and your family we extend our sincerest condolences.

Ross was simply the finest lawyer I ever encountered. My opinion is based on 66 years of friendship starting with our days in Commerce & Finance & later at the U of T Law School. At Law School the rest of us were trying to acquire a legal education which Ross already had absorbing his father's knowledge as he grew up. If a professor's instruction puzzled us, Ross would set us straight on what the law was. During my 43 years of practice & thereafter he was my "go-to-guy" on any legal issue. Little did I realize when I introduced Ross in 1972 to Ed Pickering, then heading a group which would plan & build Roy Thomson Hall, that Ross would establish a second career in the governance of the classical music scene in Toronto. Ross was also a great bridge player but I could never persuade hime to enter the duplicate bridge competitions; Ross preferred to play with a few friends at home with a comfortable glass of scotch beside him. While bad health marred his final years, his friends could still rely on & treasure his realistic brief judgement on any issue, legal or otherwise.

I have read the obituary of your beloved husband, Ross, and realize how much he contributed to the world. I know that this is a terrible time for you, Ann, but I also know how strong and practical you are. My thoughts are always with you. Sandra Munn

Ron and I want to express our deep sadness on hearing about Ross's passing. It doesn't seem so long ago when we would share car rides home from U of T. Please know that we care and are thinking of you all at this time. The wonderful family you share will sustain you.
