Roy Dalzell Obituary

ROY MOSSMAN DALZELL 1935 -- 2009 It is with great sadness that the family announces the passing of Roy Dalzell on June 9, 2009 in Alberta, in his 75th year, after a two-year battle with cancer. Born in Cumbria, England, March 13, 1935. Predeceased by parents Rose and Ernest and elder brother Eric. Roy is greatly missed by his wife Geraldyne, son David, daughter Tarn, brother John, and their families. Roy emigrated from northern England to Alberta in 1953. In 1955 he joined CMHC, thus beginning a successful career in the mortgage and financial business. Roy met and married Geraldyne in Lethbridge, Alberta in 1960. At CMHC he progressed rapidly, was transferred east and became Chief Appraiser in Toronto. He moved on and helped establish a mortgage investment company which later became Morguard Investments. He became President and CEO in the early 1970's and transformed the company into Morguard Trust, overseeing an umbrella of companies across Canada and Australia. Still under 40, Roy became a member of the Young Presidents Organization, an achievement of which he was justifiably proud. The successes of Morguard led to its purchase by a large multinational insurance company. After leaving Morguard he started another financial investment company called Focus Capital Management in Toronto, before retiring to his farm in southern Ontario. Roy and Gerry enjoyed extensive travel throughout their years together. He was an interesting and knowledgeable man with strong opinions and a kind and generous heart. We will miss him greatly. A Memorial Service will be held in St. James Presbyterian Church, 6432 Main St., Stouffville, Ontario on Thursday, 23 July, 2009 at 2:00 p.m. Reception to follow in the church hall. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Foothills Country Hospice Society, Box 274, Okotoks, Alberta, T1S 1A5, www.countryhospice.org .

Len and I have many great memories of living above the garage at the farm. Roy and Gerry always were happy to come home to a clean house and yard. Roy taught me dominos while he poured me a brown cow. Often he would bring me home a gift from his trips, one I will always remember was a sheepskin vest. Occasionally I would bake Gerry and Roy an apple pie for their friday night arrival. Roy was kind and generous to us, we will always remember him fondly. My condolences to his family.

I worked with Roy for several years through the 1970's and early 1980's. He chose me to represent Morguard in the establishment of Morguard Investments Pty Ltd in Australia - an experience that positively shaped much of my and my family's future. I never worked for a finer man. God bless Roy. My sincerest condolences to Gerry and family.

I remember Roy as a larger than life personality. He shared his whiskey and his books with me and taught me the meaning of courage.
Thank you Roy.
Godspeed on your journey.
