Jan. 10, 2012.
Christine and Nolan.

Both of you have been in my prayers every night, as the anniversary of Ryan's death approaches. I pray that you have strength to get through this day and that you have fond memories of Ryan, as a husband, and a dad, and of the great man he was.

Please know that I will never forget that day, as you, and your both in my heart forever.

Just remember, Ryan was ours for a little while, but he is with Jesus forever.

I thought of your family over the holidays Ryan. I cannot imagine the pain special occasions and certain dates still bring.

I pray they feel you every day, in all they do, and know that you are not forgotten, nor will you ever be, by those of us that serve in blue.

I am so sorry about Ryan. I didn't know him but it hit me so hard when I heard of his death. Ryan you are my hero and everything I wish I could be. I too am 35 years old and want nothing more than to be a cop. You will never be forgotten, I look through stories about you everyday, I cannot get past it. Thank you for your sacrifice that you made each and everyday, to protect and serve. To Christine and Nolan, you are in my thoughts and prayers as well as all of Ryan's family.

On My Birthday, January 13, I was very saddended to hear the news about Ryan, whom I knew personally. Now that three weeks has passed I see that it was a Birthday present, for all of us.

GOD needed to send a message to the World and he did it using Canada and RYAN. Ever since his passing the world has been a calmer, better place.

Within a week of his passing, the first change was upon us. We went from a "normal" (negative) world to a "Balanced" one. Then last week we became a "Positive World. Next week, before the sheduled date to take down this tribute website, the 14th. of February, we will enter a 'Perfect" world.

In a "Perfect" world, you will be with him and he with us.Please have faith that you will see him again, becasue if you do,it will happen. Sooner than you can imagine...

Your LOVE is being felt by him.

One week after the funeral of Sgt. Russell my husband and I went to Sunday mass as usual and noticed the church was completely packed. There were no special celebrations going on and mass is never this full on any given Sunday. Parishioners started noticing and we began speaking of Sgt. Russell and thought it was him who brought us all together. We have noticed in other places of this wonderful City of Toronto a different outpouring of emotions; people are friendly, helpful, not afraid to show their emotions, hugging, and more in tune with their life and the life of others standing right beside them. We thank Sgt. Ryan Russell for opening our minds and hearts.

February 4, 2011

Dear Linda (Liberty as I knew you)
I was speaking to Yvonne last night and just found out that Ryan was your son. My heartfelt sympathies to you and all your family. From all I heard and read, you raised a wonderful son. I'm so sorry you lost him so soon.

We want to extend our deepest sympathy to Christine, Nolan, Mr&Mrs Russell& the rest of the families at this time of great sadness.
This has really touched us as we have great respect for each and every officer. We have relatives in the police force.
I can't help but think of little Nolan .I just returned last week from a memorial service for a very dear friend. My nephew and his wife were there with their son Charlie who will be 2 years old in Feb. The memorial was for Charlie's great grandmother. I can still hear Charlie saying "no Daddy" when told to do something. It was heart wrenching to see Nolan walking behind his Daddy. It reminded me of John Kennedy Jr. at the time of his Daddy's funeral.
We will remember you all in our prayers God Bless you all.

Christine, Nolan, Mr and Mrs Russell and sister Tracey.
I cant say what hasnt already been said in these 117 pages of condolences. Sgt Russell was a tremendous person with the love for his family, his job and his community who always put everyones needs before his own and Christine couldnt have described him better. I didnt know Ryan but I feel as if Id known him all my life. My heart breaks for his family and his precious son who will not only carry on his name but walk proud forever knowing his Dad left such an impression on this entire community. The funeral service was so overwhelming and the support from everyone there was truly remarkable and I know he was watching each and every person there and was put to rest with such pride and joy of not only the community and co-workers but especially his family. Those big beautifull blue eyes will live on in the donour so lucky to receive the most amazing gift from him. Sgt Russell will always be a hero in my eyes and the eyes of millions of people worldwide but nothing will ever fill the void his family will forever carry with them. Please know that he loved each and every one of you and that will stay with him forever as he watches and protects from above.

I have been overwhelmed with sadness since the death of Sgt. Russell and I wish it could have been me instead. I will always remember his name as I have with other officers killed in the line of duty in Toronto. Sadly I will always remember not being granted permission to leave the office for his funeral procession which I had planned to attend, and so I wept at my desk for hours instead. The footage of Sgt. Russell the day before his death will be an image never to be forgotten nor will his photos of being a proud father and loving husband. My thoughts and prayers to Christine for strength and baby Nolan too. I am grateful to know the gift of sight was given and that Sgt. Russell truly lives on.

As the wife of a serving Toronto Police Officer, I send my heartfelt condolences and sympathy to Christine and Nolan, Sgt. Russell's wife and son. Sadly, you are living the nightmare that every one of us prays will never happen. Know that you are surrounded by a loving "police" family. The blue brotherhood is incredibly strong and protective – they will be there to support you through the days and weeks ahead. Policing is a calling - it takes great commitment, strength, dedication and a special kind of individual to be successful as a police officer. Your husband was doing the job that he loved - serving and protecting the people of Toronto - and he made the ultimate sacrifice. January 12, 2011 was a tragic day, one that should never have happened. Your loss is felt by many and you are both in my thoughts. Sgt. Ryan Russell will never be forgotten.

Dear Mrs. Christine Russell, Nolan, Ryan’s mother, father, sister, and all of his extended family, friends, and colleagues: we would like to offer our deepest condolences to all of you, and hope that you are comforted by your many wonderful memories of Ryan. We are among the many people of Toronto who watched Ryan’s beautiful funeral and were moved to tears. We did not have to know him personally to understand what a great person he was, and to feel sadness for your tragic loss. The world is a better place because he was here with us. We have a family member in Afghanistan, and the role of our protectors is the highest calling. May God Bless and comfort you, now and always. On Tuesday we learned so much more about Sgt Ryan. Not only as his skills and passion that he had for being a Toronto Police officer, but his skills as a person and his passion for his wife and his little boy. This world has lost a great person!! Sgt Ryan we will NEVER forget you.
Christine, Nolan, Glenn, Linda, Tracy, my thoughts and prayers are with you all. Christine, Ryan would have been so proud of you for the way you stood up and told everyone how much you loved him and also for the strength you have shown in the past week.
To his sister Tracy, I especially am thinking of you. I am an older sister and have a baby brother. I truly loved your thought that he was your partner in life since you were little and that he helped you to become a better person. That is exactly how I feel about my little brother. I am sure he is proud of his big sister and truly looked up to you. My thoughts are with you as I can only imagine how hard it would be for me to lose my little brother. You will all be in my thoughts and prayers.
Lean on each other and remember all the special things Ryan brough to your lives My love and prayers are with you all. I will never forget him.

I have been so deeply saddened by your loss of Ryan.
Christine,
You are so fortunate to have had such a love with such a wonderful man and Ryan's gift to you in Nolan so precious. What a beautiful couple, what a beautiful boy your love created. I feel comfort for you in knowing that Ryan, your guardian angel will be continuing his exceptioanl police work by watching over and protecting both of you always. Your evident strength and courage shows us just a small glimpse of why Ryan so loved you.
I watched the beautiful tribute to Ryan's life (service) and have read the newspapers and am very moved by the person Ryan is....by the person you are and by the person your son is going to become. My heart goes out to you, Nolan, Ryan's parents (who raised such a wonderful man),his sister, your parents and family and all those who were blessed enough in this life to have known Ryan. His qualities, rare and special...
We so respect you, Ryan. We so are thankful for the work you did each and every day.
You will all be in our thoughts and we wish you peace.
May your memories, family, friends and love help you through this pain that no heart should ever have to feel.

I visited the funeral home on Monday and was so touched by such a warm, caring and beautiful reception that each family member showed to total strangers who came to share in their personal sorrow. What a strong and brave family! This is such a sad time when "many" would want their privacy but instead, they shared their grief with everyone.
I booked the afternoon off on Tuesday as I felt it was a historical moment for Torontonians to 'pay their final respects'. I am so glad that I felt part of this extemely sad event.
Christine - you are a very BRAVE lady and I am sure Ryan would have been SO PROUD of YOU!!!!

My wife and I attended the visitation and I attended the funeral. Christine, I admire your strength and that of your family. Your comment that you see Ryan in Nolan brought tears to my eyes. As Nolan grows and matures I am sure he will give you much pride.
We want to thank you for the safety and security Ryan and his police brothers bring to our city. As I tell every soldier I meet freedom is not free and it applies to the police who protect us at home as well as the soldiers who do so in foreign lands.

To the entire Russell family, I am so very sorry for your loss. Christine, the Grace and Bravery you demonstrated during what must be your darkest days I am in awe of. You are incredibly strong and I'm sure made Ryan very proud. The days ahead will be long and scary as you embark on an uncertain road... may the light that was Ryan guide your way and comfort you.
To Tracy, Glenn and Linda the loss for you is undeniable. There will always be a hole in your life for the rest of your days, but may your memories of Ryan bring you joy as to the remarkable young man you raised. Having grown up in the Guild, the connections to that area never leave and Ryans way of life made everyone proud.
Nolan, while you will hear stories and see pictures and will know your dad that way - the imprint your dad made on you is there just look within and you will see and feel it. Remember, you are the best part of your dad and the love he had for your mom.
My heart goes out to you all of you during this time.

My mother asked me to send this for her as she completely understands what you are going through. My father was killed in the line of duty Dec 22/68. As the days pass and the people surrounding you go back to their daily lives you are left with the empty space that Ryan used to fill for you. As you struggle to move forward now with Nolan, make sure you talk about Ryan everyday as our mother did and still does with us. We may not have had the chance to spend the much desired time with our father but we do know what a great man he was and Nolan will as well. It will not ease your pain but I hope having the knowledge that Ryan served in one of the greates proffessions of all and that there is a special place for these people in heaven will bring you some comfort in the dark days ahead. http://www.behappy101.com/the-dash-poem-text.html This is a link to a poem that sums up everything and juding by what I saw and heard yesterday Ryan's dash was huge. January 19, 2011

Dear Christine, Nolan, Glenn, Linda, and all who were closest to Ryan,

Please accept our heartfelt sympathy in your loss of Ryan. Since the news of Ryan's injury first broke, we prayed for him. When we learned several hours later that Ryan had died, our hearts broke; particularly for you, Christine, and for little Nolan. Know that our family is holding you close in our hearts.
As time goes by, may your beautiful memories of Ryan slowly begin to cause you to smile quietly to yourself, instead of crying. May those memories one day bring you comfort and sustenance, instead of grief.
We want you to know how deeply we care about you, how deeply Ryan's loss has affected each of us.
May it comfort you to know that your Ryan's integrity and his horrific loss have given each of us a new sense of respect for the awesome responsibility and risk willingly undertaken every day by police officers, and by those who love and support them. I am ashamed to say that I have tended to take for granted the presence of police in my community (Peel Region) without stopping to realize the risk inherent in the job; there is no such thing as routine day for any member of a police force or any emergency responder. Ryan's death taught us that, emphatically. It is a lesson which we will carry with us always. The first opportunity I get, I am going to approach one of our Peel constables and express gratitude for what he or she does every day. We hope it helps you in some tiny way to know that.
Though your loss Ryan is profoundly personal, Ryan's life and death have had a monumental impact on the larger world, in both personal and symbolic ways. That you shared Ryan so freely with the world, in life and in death, has been a huge gift to your fellow humans in general, and to the policing community world-wide. We hope that there can be some bit of comfort derived from knowing that.
Christine, you are an extraordinary person. You showed that yesterday at Ryan's funeral, but, even if you hadn't spoken at the service, knowing that an exceptional man such as Ryan chose you to be his partner for life, speaks volumes about you.
Thank you for sharing that sweet photo of Nolan behind the wheel of Ryan's police cruiser. We have the exact same photo of our son, at the same age, in the same position, with his daddy beside him - although our car was an old Grand Am.
Thank you for reading this long note, Christine. Know that we will continue to hold you and Nolan in our thoughts. Keep close to your family and friends. Accept help when you want it. Be gentle with yourself.

With warmest regards,
Julie Giguere, Murray Wilson and John Wilson

Christine, my heart goes out to you and family. As a mother and wife, I can't imagine the pain you are experiencing right now but one thing I do know, God knows why and He has a plan for your life and the life of your son. I want to encourage you to trust God and let Him heal you and lead your life continuously. I have tried it and have proven that He can heal you with all the pain you are experiencing right now. May God bless you and Nolan always! Celia (Toronto, ON)

My heartfelt sympathies to Christine, Nolan and the extended family members. Having just gone through a bereavement myself, may I suggest that to keep memories of Ryan alive, you take some of his clothing and have a quilt made - something to pass down to Nolan. I had one made for my late parents. God Bless you all.

In life we come across people who have something "special"... this happened with Sgt. Russell and his lovely wife Christine. Their spirit was felt by more than one city. Thank you for making us all want to be better at life.......... the bar has been set much higher, and that's a good thing.
Sgt. Ryan your life made a difference.

What can one say at a time like this... especially when you have never had the pleasure of knowing the departed or his family? There are no words of comfort. Nothing will ease the pain or loss for the ones left behind. We hear of deaths often and while feel bad about them, we know it is part of life and for the most part don't affect us personally. In this case though I shed tears for Ryan Russell... for a life cut down early... for the wife and son who have to find a way to move on... for family, friends, and colleagues whom Ryan has inevitably and undeniably touched. When you hear the story and see his picture (the pictures)... you can feel the love and just know that we lost one of the good ones. It is a reminder for us to hug our loved ones every chance we get as we do not know what life has in store for us... a reminder to speak a kind word or share a smile... a reminder to be good and do good. Thoughts and prayers are with you, Christine and Nolan - I can't even imagine - as well as to the parents and family who have lost someone so dear. God bless. In Heartfelt Sympathy ~ Ann

Dear Family:

As the wife of an Ottawa Staff Sergeant, grand daughter of a now deceased Inspector with Ottawa Police, and a sister of a retired RCMP officer, I have so much respect for what our men & women in blue do each & every day. My heart aches for you all, Ryan was taken too soon, and gave his life to " serve & protect ". I do not know you personally, but please know that my thoughts & prayers are with each & every one of you , his loving family, and may happy memories of his short time on this earth, help you in the difficult days to come. The police family is large & supportive, and will help you in the days to come.

God Bless you all

I wish to offer my heartfelt sympathies to the family and freinds of Ryan Russell. Though I have never met Ryan or his wonderful family it is obvious that he loved and was loved by his family and friends. His dedication to his work will never be forgotten. To Christine, there are no words that can ease your pain. But as someone who too unexpectedly lost my husband two years ago I can only try to remind you that you are not alone. Once you've had that much needed time to yourself and as difficult as it may seem, reach out to those around you. Though you have incredible strength that don't try to carry the load yourself. God bless you and your son Nolan at this most difficult time. May your hearts find peace.
