SAMANTHA O'NEILL Obituary

O'NEILL, SAMANTHA "SAM" MEREDITH May 1, 1988 – April 4, 2023 Forever Stay Gold Forever gold in our hearts, we say farewell for now to Sam, our beautiful daughter, sister, cousin, niece and great friend. Sam passed away, on April 4, 2023, after heroically facing the challenges of cervical cancer over the past year. Sam was never defeated. She chose her fate admirably and with courage. Sam was a runner, vegan, animal rights advocate, writer, an incredible person, and friend to so many. Sam is survived by her parents, Jim and Gaye O'Neill; brother, Ben (and partner Nikki); sister, Sydney (fiancé Katie); and many aunts, uncles and cousins. Sam's East Van Run Crew and many friends, family and colleagues gathered at R & B Brewery, Vancouver, on April 7th, to pay tribute. On April 30, 2023, at Deer Creek Golf Club, 2700 Audley Rd., Ajax, ON, from 1 to 5 p.m., we will gather again to celebrate this amazing woman. Beginning at 2 p.m., we will say a few words, and toast Sam. Our heartfelt thanks to her cousin, Taryn, great friends, Megan, Katie and Rose, for your loving care, as well as to the incredible staff at the Palliative Unit of St. Paul's Hospital in Vancouver. We will be forever grateful. In lieu of flowers, a donation towards cervical cancer research through the Canadian Cancer Society would be greatly appreciated. In Sam's own poetic words: Stay Gold she said, "incurable" I heard, "unloveable" I heard, "you'll never be loved again" because who could ever love the broken I'm a piece of work and I've heard that no one wants to work these days but Kintsukuroi – the Japanese art of mending broken pottery by filling in the cracks with gold – would have you think otherwise would have you fill my cracks with gold would have you admire the glimmer of hope, the shimmer of resilience that has replaced my imperfections the more broken, the more beautiful the more broken, the more loved, it turns out because the more I break, the more you fill me with gold and as I am emblazoned with the sparkle of a million galaxies floating through space my body is overtaken I have become a reflection of your love and I hope this is just the beginning I hope I will forever stay gold - sam o'neill

I would like to send My deepest condolences to all of Sam's family and friends. Sam worked for me in Banquets in Kananaskis. I always loved her energy and enthusiasm. She was a great friend and a pleasure to work with, I always thought of her as a little sister. My heart broke to hear of her passing.
I regret that we didn't keep in touch but will always remember her fondly.
Please accept my sincerest sympathy.

"The meaning of life is to find your gift, the purpose of life is to give it away" by William Shakespeare. It is obvious Sam had found many of her gifts and shared them willingly in her writing. I never met this lovely young woman, but I know I would have liked her. Dearest friend Gaye, Jim, Ben & Nikki, Sydney & Katie, all friends and family, our deepest heart felt sympathy does not begin to help ease your pain and sorrow, I only wish it was so. Sending love from Ed, Virg, Chelsea, Jeremy & Copper xoxoxoxoxo

Sam's parents live in my community and I often have conversations with her mom, Gaye. Gaye is a fabulous person and it seems to me that Sam was also fabulous. I think the world has lost a truly important person. I extend my sincere condolences to Gaye, and the entire family and Sam's friends for their tragic loss.
