COUNSELL, John Graham Christopher - At the Guelph General Hospital on Wednesday, March 11, 2015 at the age of 89. John was predeceased by his loving wife, Jennie, in 2008 and is survived by nephews, Graham (Christine) and Stuart Counsell in England and great- nieces and nephews Ross, Jodie, Sara, Jonathan, Amy and Emily. Predeceased by his brother Tom in 1968. John Graham Christopher Counsell was born in Newcastle upon Tyne, England on June 27, 1925 to parents Thomas Henry Counsell and Sarah Isabella Counsell (Graham). He served at Lloyds Bank from 1941 to 1957 with an interruption from 1943 to 1947 to serve in the British Armed Forces. John married Jennie Wilson on September 17, 1949 in England and then immigrated to Canada in 1957 when John joined the Royal Bank of Canada. John managed a number of Royal Bank branches in the Hamilton, Burlington and Guelph areas until his retirement in 1985, when John was elected Mayor of Guelph, a position he served for three consecutive terms to 1994. During John's careers, he was also very involved with numerous charitable and civic organizations within the City of Guelph. All are welcome to attend a celebration of his life at the St. George's Anglican Church, 99 Woolwich Street, Guelph, on Friday, March 20, 2015, at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions to the Guelph Humane Society, Guelph General Hospital or to St. Joseph's Health Centre, Guelph would be appreciated.
