SEAN SHANAHAN Obituary

SHANAHAN, SEAN BRYAN On May 15, 2022, at 1:15 p.m., Sean Bryan Shanahan, passed away peacefully at home, at the age of 71, surrounded by his five children. Sean's wonderous life began in Scarborough, Ontario, in a house situated on the Bluffs, overlooking Lake Ontario. Sean's parents, Pegi and Pat Shanahan, who both served in WWI, raised 4 sons and a daughter with a strong work ethic and a determination that Sean would carry with him throughout his life. Sean displayed early on, a special talent for athletics and business, earning a full hockey scholarship to play with the Providence College Friars, coached by Lou Lamoriello from 1971 to 1973, as well as graduating with a degree in Finance. In hockey, Sean was described as a six-foot-three bearded and bruising forward with the size to make an impact. His hockey career included playing for two championship teams. He won the AHL Calder Cup with the 1976 Nova Scotia Voyagers and the NHL Stanley Cup with the 1976 Montreal Canadiens in the same year. After a 7-year professional hockey career, Sean turned his talents to the Capital Markets. The charm, perseverance and creativity that he leveraged in life helped in his success in mining finance and private equity investments. Sean was a true raconteur. Stories, often punctuated with a wink from his sparkling blue eyes, were his wise way of teaching lessons so that they stuck with you long after they were told. His fabled tales include rooming with the infamous hockey player Steve Durbano, escaping cannibals in Papua, New Guinea, and wrestling a bear in Nova Scotia. All true… we think. Sean enjoyed traveling, playing golf, excellent wine, and he was an avid reader. Sean left a profound impact on everyone who encountered him, he made the mundane magical and the hard things easy. Most importantly he will always be remembered for being the best Dad his kids could ever have. Some of his last words were "My whole life has been an adventure, with more to come!" He loved it all. He is survived by his brother Chris Shanahan, children Kailen Shanahan (Emma), Vanessa Shanahan, Caitlin Shanahan, Courtney Shanahan, Ryan Shanahan (Tanya) and grandchildren Lola and Wolfe Shanahan. A memorial Service will be held at Mt. Pleasant Cemetery this Friday the 20th, at 375 Mt. Pleasant Road in Toronto, Ontario. The Visitation will begin at 3 p.m., the service at 4 p.m., and the reception from 5-7 p.m. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Canadian Cancer Society.

Hello Shanahan family! My name is John Patrick Murphy, and I live in Halifax, Nova Scotia, and Sean's name came up as I was talking with some folks about the glory years of the Nova Scotia Voyageurs. I have a stick that he gave me with his name on the shaft and as a little kid in the 70's growing up in North End Halifax, it was the best feeling when a Voyageur would give you a stick, and then having to run like crazy out of the Halifax Forum as Freddie Voeltz or Lionel Jackson would try to retrieve it. Not sure if it's possible or needed, but if you would like the stick back, let me know. He was a great guy and always has time for us as kids. John Murphy, age 60.
