SERGIO TAGLIAVINI JELLINEK It is with heavy and deeply saddened hearts and minds that we announce the passing of Sergio Tagliavini Jellinek, iconic Co-founder and Editor-in-Chief of Lo Specchio, Ontario's most influential Italian language weekly newspaper, serving the Greater Toronto Metropolitan Area. Tagliavini passed away peacefully on Monday, January 25, 2016. He was 80. Born in Genoa, Italy, June 12, 1935, Tagliavini grew up in Milan, where he also completed his studies. He arrived in Canada in 1970 and soon established himself as a top Journalist and Newsroom Editor in Toronto's rich and vibrant Italian language media. In 1973, he became Managing Editor of Corriere Canadese, Canada's Italian language daily while producing and hosting top quality public affairs programs on radio and tv stations serving the then quickly growing Italian-Canadian community. Tagliavini's passion for his profession and desire to constantly enrich the quality of news services available to the community, turned him into an Editor and Media Entrepreneur, co-founding magazines such as Donna, the first Italian language publication dedicated to women printed outside Italy and then Stile - an English language magazine dedicated to culture and lifestyles. Then in 1984, he co-founded Lo Specchio. In the three decades since, Tagliavini turned the budding York Region Weekly into one of the most authoritative voices of the Italian Canadian community. And he cared deeply for his community, as shown through his guiding leadership in the development and realization of the Monument to the Italian Workers killed on the job. Tagliavini received many outstanding achievement awards throughout his career, from Italy (Cavaliere della Repubblica Italiana) and Canada and recognized as News Reporter of the year various times by various organizations. Tagliavini leaves his wife Franca and daughter Simona. A private family only service, as per his wishes, has been held.
