Sheldon Lush Obituary

SHELDON H. LUSH March 9, 1918 - February 8, 2011 Shelly left us peacefully just before his 93rd birthday on Tuesday, February 8, 2011 with Jackie and his sons Donald and David by his side. He was predeceased by his wife of 65 years, Betty, in May 2003. He will be greatly missed by his children Don (Martha), JoAnne (Bob), Gwendolyn (Paul), Mary (David) and David (Brenda) and his 15 grandchildren, 5 great-grandchildren, his many nieces and nephews and by his partner and soulmate Jackie. Shelly loved life. He spent many years at the cottage on Stoney Lake where he swam, canoed and taught his children how to swim and enjoy the great outdoors with all their cousins. He skied, golfed and travelled as often as he could. His business career was exemplary as was his commitment to his community. He was born in the east end of Toronto and received his early education at Malvern Collegiate Institute. Upon graduation in 1938 he joined Supreme Aluminum Industries Limited and began his business career as an apprentice tool maker. In 1960, he was appointed president and general manager, a position he held until 1972 when he was elected chairman and CEO. Shelly held this position until the company was sold in 1985. His philosophy of profit sharing and employee share ownership had a life changing effect on the lives of every employee. He was loved by his many employees and well respected by his many business associates. He was a founding member of the Board of Governors of Centennial College, Director and Vice Chairman of the Canadian Institute of Profit Sharing, Director and Treasurer of the Canadian Hardware & Housewares Manufacturers Association and inducted into their hall of fame in 1987. He was active in the Rotary Club of Scarborough, past director of the Scarborough YMCA, the Red Cross and lifetime member and director at the Scarborough Golf and Country Club, he was also a founding member of the Toronto Metro Zoo. He contributed to many charities, one of his favourite being Centenary Hospital, now the Rouge Valley Health System, which his father Harold Victor Lush was instrumental in founding in 1965. Shelly taught all who knew him the power of positive thinking no matter what the circumstance and to live each day as though it was your last. He made everyone he met smile and always said, 'Nothing endures but change'. There will be a celebration of his life at Scarborough Golf and Country Club on Sunday, April 10, 2011 starting at 12 noon until 4 p.m. In lieu of flowers, contributions to the Alzheimer Society or a charity of your choice can be made in his name.

My fa ther George was a POW friend of Don Lush and I was privileged to know Shelley, Don and the family and share many childhood memories of the cottage and lodge on Stoney Lake growing up in the 1950s and 1960s. Wonderful people.

Shelley visited me in England around 1985 and gave me a consultancy that kept my business afloat - he also taught me how a real, dry martini can flatten a grizzly!

Bob Worsfold- Olds, Alberta My condolences to Don and Martha and the rest of the Lush family on Shelly's passing. Shelly was a very generous man.One spring evening when a group of us were down in their basement and two of us were talking about going out west for the summer,(1964), but had no money, offered us a loan of $100 each to be paid back with interest by the end of the year. We took him up on the offer and had the most memorable summer of my life hitch-hiking from Toronto to Vancouver and back. Thank you shelly for broadening our horizons and for being there. An unforgetable man. Thanks Shelly.

A memorial service was held for Sheldon Harold Lush last might in Petchaburi, Thailand. It was attended by daughters Mary and Gwendolyn, and David and Paul, respective outlaws. Over a few cold Chang there was much laughter and storytelling as we paid tribute to a man so beloved. The girls accessed memories from distant childhood of a wonderful father. Paul and I recounted stories more contemporary, such as Paul's wedding. It was there, in Yukon theme, that Sheldon, in full western regalia, including six shooters, confronted all sons in law.  He pulled the guns, and declared "I don't know which of you b.............. I should shoot first". It was a wonderful wedding.

Last night, it was a wonderful memorial. You would have enjoyed it, Chief.  Too bad you couldn't make it.  RIP.

I have many fond memories of Uncle Shelly. His sense of humour and out-going personality made him the kind of uncle anyone would love to have. He will be missed but he definitely had a great life and one worth celebrating. All our love and condolences to Don, Joey, Mary, Qweny and David, and their spouses and children, on the loss of their father and grandfather.

Our mother worked for many years at Supreme in Pickering, she had a great deal of respect for the Lush family and spoke highly of Shelly Lush. His profit sharing initiatives did have life changing effects on our family, our parents enjoyed a very comfortable retirement and provided their 4 grandchildren with wonderful post-secondary educational opportunities. He did make a difference in people's lives. Our condolences to his family & friends. Thank you.

I've never met a man who embodied "Integrity" more than Shelly. His word was his bond and his attitude was infectious. Never would you meet and not come away empowered and ready to take on the world. Thank you for your words, your presence, your wisdom and your judgement. Your presence will be dearly missed.

Shelly and Betty Lush were our parents dearest friends and your family touched our lives in so many ways. Christmas Eve at your home is one of my most treasured memories. Along with summer evenings on The Verandah looking out over the green at Scarboro. Our love to you all...Susie Bright and Shelley and Michael Melanson. He was the most wonderful man.

Colombe and I wish to extend our condolences to the Lush family.
I had the good fortune to meet him on several occasions...Mary and David's wedding, their many renovation projects in Ottawa..
A very rare and remarkable man that walked this earth with pride, dignity and a love for his progeny. I think you were all lucky and blessed.

The Chief lives on! His ripple effect has touched all who had the good fortune to have known him. May we all find it in ourselves to make the world a better place, as he did. Thanks Chief for enriching our lives and for all the many many laughs. I miss you.

Uncle Shelly was the real deal...if the measure of a man is the positive "ripple effect" he has on others...then Shelly was a "tsunami" of a man....missed forever,
