SHELLEY SNELL Obituary

SHELLEY SUZANNE SNELL In Toronto, Ontario, sweet Shelley peacefully left us at Sunnybrook Hospital on October 8, 2013 at 1:40 p.m. Her sister Jill was by her side along with her brother-in-law Alex and very close friends. At the age of 51, Shelley succumbed to the unstoppable attack of metastatic colon cancer after 5 years of optimistic and courageous perseverance. Our brave warrior Shelley went through 7 surgeries and many treatments until she could no longer fight the onset of liver failure. Shelley is survived by her best friend and sister Jill and her husband Alex, her adoring nephew Evan, her step-father Bob, her amazing relatives spread around North America from the Snell, Moote, Elliott, Ozard and Hegan families. She will be remembered and achingly missed by her vast network of loyal friends and colleagues. She is predeceased by her father Bill Ozard and her mother Natalie Snell (Hegan). Shelley was born in Halifax, Nova Scotia to Natalie and Bill on November 2, 1961 (she was later adopted by Robert Snell during Natalie's second marriage). She was a going concern from day 1, busy and chatty and always on a mission. These are traits that never changed. As a child and young girl, her family moved frequently. She had a difficult time with transition but made unparalleled friendships that last to this day, rooted in love and loyalty. Her best memories almost always involved music and dancing. Summers in Nova Scotia with our beloved Elliott family members; Aunt Jean, Uncle Carl, Mike, Bill and Glenda and Saturday night dances at their Portapique Dance Hall where we waltzed, two-stepped and hopped our way through the nights. Many festivals were attended by Jill and Shelley with new dance steps learned and new friends made along the way. Shell spent most of her adult life in the media, working in newspaper, radio (the CHUM group) and finally in the music industry where she spent the rest of her professional life at BMG, Universal and Sony Music. Shelley was a passionate music lover and her enthusiasm and conscientious work ethic benefitted many Canadian and International artists, as well as her co-workers. Shelley was a non-judgmental, loving woman with a sharp wit and a huge heart. She was feisty and fiery and was not shy to share a passionate opinion. She was beautiful inside and out. Her love for animals was known far and wide and will continue through the creation of Shelley's Foster House, a foster home for dogs to better prepare and train them for adoption in partnership with established shelters. A celebration of Shelley's incredible but unthinkably brief life will take place on Tuesday, October 22nd at the Berkeley Church, 315 Queen St. East, Toronto at 4:00 p.m. A link will be provided for donations shortly via Jill's facebook page and www.roadangelentertainment.com Heartfelt thanks go out to the amazing people at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre who worked so hard to prolong Shelley's life - in particular to Dr. Scott Berry, Dr. Kenneth Peckham, Dr. Calvin Law, Dr. Peter Stotland, Dr. Madeleine Woods, Nurse Mary Jamieson and Dr. Carmine Simone of Toronto East General Hospital. To her Sony music family who had her back all the way through this crisis. The generosity displayed by Sony under the leadership of Shane Carter allowed Shelley the ability to enjoy her life without worry right up to her final days. Also to her unwaveringly loyal friends and relatives who helped throughout her illness and especially in her final week of life at Sunnybrook. In keeping with her wishes, Shelley's celebration of her life will include great food, music and dogs. Donations, in lieu of flowers, would be appreciated and can be made to the new non-profit start up being run by her sister Jill - Shelley's Foster House. We hope Shelley is peaceful, happy and pain free, sharing a martini with her dear friend Garner Kinmond and dancing to country music.

Dearest Jill,
Shelley was the most generous, forgiving human I have ever known. She will be in my heart always. How fortunate I was to have had our trip to Europe in May - a memory to be cherished forever.
All my love and great appreciation to you and your family for taking such good care of her.

My 2-legged dog, Blossom, and I send ANGEL KISSES through the wind ...

Dearest Snell family ... I am a very close friend of Krisztina, Kathy and Julianna and have to say how very touched I am by your beautifully written obituary ... mere words will never be able to express how sorry I was to hear of Shelley's passing, though I did not even know her ... through your expert account, one immediately is drawn to this amazingly beautiful creature ... wishing they could have been a part of her wonder-filled life, so full of love of family and dear friends!! Yet how harsh reality can be ... how unfair!! I too, have lost precious friends, dear friends, far too young ... I empathize with you ... and my heart echoes your pain ... Shelley is certainly "bringin' down the house" now and all the dogs she's helped in her life are rockin' right alongside of her ... My sincerest condolences <3

Jill, To you and your family, I send my heart and my deepest condolences. I didn't know Shelley well, but I didn't have to. She had such an obviously wonderful lightness of spirit, that I was drawn to her immediately. It feels so wrong to me that she was taken away so soon. I can only imagine how you all must feel. I hope her wonderful life and spirit, and the way she touched so many people offer you some comfort. xo

Jill:

While I never had the pleasure and honor of meeting Shelley, I sit here at my desk crying over her loss. I am a two-time colon cancer survivor and have been fighting the disease for over 13 years. Stories like Shelley's will continue to inspire me to keep up the fight personally but also continue to work hard to raise funding to fight this insidious enemy. Rest in peace Shelley. We will continue to fight on your behalf.

My most vivid memory of Shelley is flying down Whistler mountain followed by an apres ski beverage at the Longhorn. Wherever she is, I wish for her both that rush and the camaraderie that accompanied it. She will be truly missed. My most sincere condolences to Shelley's family.

My sincere condolences to Jill and Shelley's family. I just happened upon her obituary and was truly touched by it, then as I read on I realized that we are connected through Shirley & Merrille Elliott. I had never met Shelley, but feel we are kindred spirits in our love for music & animals. Her light will continue to shine bright. Linda Barrett xo

I met Shelley in Grade 7 and never lost touch with her. I know I can speak for all her close friends (of which there are many!!) that she will be terribly missed and we now feel a huge void in our lives. She showed such strength during her illness and set an example to all of us. Rest in Peace. Love to Jill, Bob, Alex and Evan.
