Stephen CROSBY Obituary

CROSBY, Stephen Patrick On Monday, January 29, 2018 in his 65th year, at Sunnybrook Hospital Palliative Care Unit, after a long struggle with melanoma. A son of the late Kenneth James and Mary Josephine (Dunne) Crosby, predeceased by his brothers Tom and Joe, survived by his brothers Michael (Erica) and Peter, sister Mary Jo, niece Jessica, nephews Matt, Ken, Ben, Andrew, Jon and Brian. In 1974, Stephen joined the custodial staff at Senator O'Connor College School, where he formed a special bond with many of the teachers and students alike. Friendships that have lasted beyond his active duty at Senator O'Connor, as witnessed by the many visits and calls, during his 58-month battle with cancer. His always present warm smile will be missed by all. Stephen never used his disabilities from Cerebral Palsy as an excuse for not working or participating in sports. With only the use of his right arm, he competed in swimming, in the very first Special Olympics Canadian national competition, held June, 1969, in Toronto. He later enjoyed playing softball, squash, golf and fishing and sometimes did better than others with no disabilities. He was an inspiration to those who witnessed his determination to try, and try again, until he reached his desired goal. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, January 31st from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at the R.S. Kane Funeral Home, 6150 Yonge Street (at Goulding, south of Steeles). Funeral Mass will be held on Thursday, February 1st at 9:30 a.m. at Holy Cross Funeral Home, 211 Langstaff Road East, Thornhill. Interment Holy Cross Cemetery. The Crosby family would like to extend our heartfelt appreciation to the Community Care Nurses, especially Lorelie Baysa, who attended to Stephen's wound over a thousand times, she was Stephen's 'Florence Nightingale'. Also special thanks for the care and compassion of Dr. Petrella, Dr. Doherty and their team members, of the Odette Cancer Centre, plus, Dr. Selby and the nurses and support staff on the Palliative Unit of Sunnybrook Hospital. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations in memory of Stephen be directed to the Sunnybrook Foundation, 2075 Bayview Avenue, Toronto, ON, M4N 3M5, (sunnybrook.ca), phone 416-480-4483. Deepest sympathy to all of the Crosby family. Steve was a true example of what can be accomplished through a positive attitude and hard work, even in the face of significant obstacles

I have fond memories of Steve with his ready smile as a neighbor on Lorraine Dr, when he visited Kath and I in Prince George and the last time when he and Peter joined my family at a Blue Jays game. I remember the smile on his face when a foul ball bounced in front of us hit his beer can and landed in his lap. (He didn't drop the beer.)My thoughts are with Mike, Pete, Mary Jo and the rest of the Crosby family.

I have such fond memories of Stephen. I remember our chats over the backyard fence on Lorraine Dr. He had such a beautiful smile and would always ask how I was and what was new. He was so polite, even when I teased him and gave him a hard time. Of course he was pretty good at giving it right back. He had a terrific sense of humour.
Our deepest sympathies go out to Mike, Pete and Mary Jo and the Crosby family.
