SOMERVILLE, Father Stephen —

Born April 1, 1931; ordained a priest of the Archdiocese of Toronto May 26, 1956; died December 12, 2015.

Celebrating his gifted life and faithful ministry on earth are his sisters Janet Somerville and Moira van Nooten, with her husband John and their children Margaret, Helena, Johan, Anneke, Sebastian and Miriam, and his many friends in faith.

As an organist, composer and singer of music; as an ardent birdwatcher and camper; as a writer, a mentor and pastor of souls, Stephen was in all things a priest of Jesus Christ.

Fr Stephen was my first pastor in Thorncliffe and the most dedicated priest I have ever known, especially in hearing confessions. He was in the confessional 30 minutes before every weekend Mass all year. During lent he was in the confessional before every weekday Mass too. I wish more priests were like him.

My condolences to surviving family members, especially. He wrote wonderful music and was a gentle man. May he rest in peace. Special greetings to Janet who taught me and many others, history, at Loretto College School. I became a history teacher because of you, Janet, and Sr. Melanie McCann IBVM.
