SUSAN RUSSELL Obituary

RUSSELL, SUSAN D. October 2, 1952 – February 28, 2023 The skating community is saddened to learn of the passing of Susan D. Russell, a longtime figure skating journalist from Toronto and passionate supporter of the sport at all levels. A native of Australia, Susan had a two-decade association with International Figure Skating (IFS) Magazine, first as a freelance photographer, but eventually advancing to writing and senior editing roles. Several years ago, she acquired ownership of the publication from an American company, and also served as its publisher and editor-in-chief. Under her direction, the magazine grew to become a leading voice in the sport, and Susan also worked tirelessly to provide daily updates on IFS' website and social media channels. During her time with IFS, Susan covered four Olympic Winter Games (2006, 2010, 2014 and 2018), numerous World Championships, Grand Prix Finals, and other international competitions, along with being a regular presence at national championships in Canada and the United States. She had planned to be at the recent ISU World Junior Figure Skating Championships in Calgary, but sadly passed days before it began. Susan's family is making arrangements for her body to be returned to Australia, where she will be buried in her beloved homeland. A memorial is being planned for Toronto at a future date.

I knew Susan from 1985 and was her boyfriend for 8 yrs until 2003. We spent many weekends at my lakeside cabin in the woods enjoying nature and fishing. We had a very special bond and she was a unique spirit. She was an freelance executive secretary in the legal community which provided her the opportunity to pursue her passion for photography and figure skating. Although we parted our lives journeys together I always missed her call of "Bratty" when she needed my attention. Susan may you fly through the heavens gliding and jumping like the figure skaters you loved. With the greatest love my dear.

So sorry to read about Susan's death. I met her at a conference some years ago about the media and women's sports, and shared a convivial lunch table with her and other journalists with figure skating backgrounds. A brief acquaintance, but an entertaining and memorable one.

I knew Susan as a mentor, colleague, and fellow figure skating fan. She was firm-handed but open with her advice, and never withheld her wisdom when she thought I needed guidance as a young photographer. Her praise was rare but always genuine, and I valued it all the more when she gave it. I´m very saddened to hear of her loss, and even more grateful that I had the chance to speak and work with her the last time we met at Skate Canada. I offer my deepest condolences to her friends and family. Thank you for all you´ve given to figure skating, Susan. Please have an easy trip home to Australia and rest peacefully.
