SYDNEY WATTON Obituary

WATTON, SYDNEY PAUL It is with great sadness the family of (Sydney) Paul Watton announces his passing, on January 15, 2023. Paul was born on March 16, 1930 in Lyme Regis, England. He left school at age 15 to pursue an Apprenticeship in the aircraft industry, and then set off for Canada on the RMS Queen Mary at age 25. He settled in Toronto, where he soon met his wife, Frances Hopper. They moved to Cranbrooke Avenue in Toronto soon after their marriage and raised their children, David and Barbara, there. He lived in the house on Cranbrooke until his death, at age 92. Paul worked at De Havilland Aircraft Company as a Metallurgy Lab Technician for 30 years, until his retirement. He enjoyed building and flying model airplanes and was a passionate Classical music enthusiast throughout his life. He enjoyed weekends at the family cottage near Picton, Ontario, for many years. Before the cottage was built he took David and Barbara and various friends on regular Saturday adventures to nearby parks in the city. After Barbara moved to the Yukon in 1986, he made several trips by car to visit – he loved driving and really enjoyed these long road trips! Paul was predeceased by his wife, Frances, in 2017. He is survived by his son, David; daughter, Barbara (Ralph); fondly remembered grandson, Ross; and nieces and nephews in England. A Memorial Service will be held at Giffen-Mack and Trull Funeral Home in Toronto, on March 14, 2023.

Frances worked with me at North York Public Library. I recall her looking forward to retiring to Picton where she intended to have an entire room of Benjamin Bunny, etc.! I met Sydney through Frances - they would sometimes drive me home to Yonge and Broadway. He was a funny, sincere, self-effacing gentleman of the old style. After Fran´s death, I tried to google the kids but doubted they would remember me. A charming, bright family. Will always have their memories in my heart, little though I knew them. Blessings.
