TERENCE BARRETT Obituary

TERENCE (TERRY) BARRETT September 13, 1941 to May 30, 2012 A dearly loved husband, father, grandfather, friend and prankster. He lived his life with integrity and determination, inspiring everyone who met him. Born to Margaret Barrett (nee Chambers, predeceased) in Newcastle Upon Tyne, England, Terry preferred to enjoy the mischief of his friends, rather than focus on his studies at Gosforth Grammar School. This did not deter him from achieving his CA designation in 1963 in his first attempt, a rare accomplishment amongst all the interns he worked with at Price Waterhouse. Terry married his best friend, Penny (nee Vernon) in 1965. They moved to Suffolk, England and eventually settled in Montreal, Quebec in 1970. Together they built a family, children, Claire Scaife (Rob) of Burlington, Allison (predeceased) and Michael (Rebecca) of Vaughan. He also built a family of friends to whom he was fiercely loyal. Throughout the Roxborough Legion Soccer team, Old Timers' Hockey of Dollard or his co-workers at Eastern Electric and Roussel, Terry was known as a fierce competitor. As founder of Baralex Inc. he ran his business with quiet and unassuming savvy that endeared him to everyone who worked with him. For those that dared, he was a force to be reckoned with in any negotiation. On the soccer field or hockey rink he allowed his full competitive nature to show. "Basher Barrett" played fair but hard. Being a transplant patient, it was not beyond him to yell "watch my kidney" as an effective deeking strategy. Terry truly came into his glory as Granddad to Katelyn, Johnathan and Ian. His dedication to this role prompted him to move to Burlington, Ontario in 2004 to oversee their chaos. He taught them all he knew about finding the joy in all of life's situations. Finally, Terry never met a dog he did not love. Especially his granddogs Wilbert, Jersey and Percy. In keeping with Terry's zest for life, a private cremation has taken place and a request to sign your donor card in his honour and direct all contributions to the Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) Foundation in lieu of flowers is appreciated. Well I only got to meet Terry a few years ago when he came into the hospital and I got stuck with him as a patient ! He was the best patient to ever get stuck with .... Always walking side by side with his wonderful wife those two would walk into my department and no matter what kind of day I was having Terry put a smile on my face ! Such a caring person, he always wanted to hear about my life and any news I had for him ! There would be days at work where things weren't going well and I would think "man, I wish Terry & Penny would walk through that door" I realized what good hearted people they are and Terry was the reason I wanted to do what I did ! He was my Favourite patient and Always will be ... He loved to chat about his wonderful family and though I only met them for a few minutes, I can see why he did ... Penny & family my heart has gone out to you all ! And Terry Keep smiling up there :)

Mrs. Barrett, I just found out about Terry. My condolences to you and your family. Working with Terry at Baralex enriched my life. I will remember him as a man that loved to laugh and make other people laugh, also that he spoke lovingly of his wife, children and grandchildren. I greatly admired his dedication to his family and his high spirit.

Penny,
I was very sorry to hear about Terry's passing from my brother Ray. It is many years since I played in the Legion soccer team when I was on vacation from Scotland, but I still treasure the photos I have of that team and, of course, the memory of playing with Terry and the lads on those very warn evenings in Montreal. Please accept my deepest sympathy and that of my mother Flo, who aged 91 years, still remembers meeting you both and your family in Mercier St, Dollard. Ron Lancashire
