Thomas BEER Obituary

BEER, Thomas Eugene - B.Sc. OAC (Guelph); M.Sc. U of Reading, UK Sadly on Monday, May 28, 2012, Tom passed peacefully away at Northumberland Hills Hospital in Cobourg, ON. Beloved husband and best friend for over 64 years to Patricia Bilbrough. Adored father of Lidianne Northwood of Grafton, Catherine (John) Barlow of Barrie, Paul (Suzanne) Beer of Markham and Charles (deceased). Proud grandfather to 7 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren. Loved brother of Dr. Michael Beer of Baltimore, Maryland. Born in Budapest, Hungary on March 27, 1924 to Dr. Paul and Lidia Beer. He immigrated with his family to Canada in 1938, settling in Georgetown, ON. He began his life with Patricia on a farm, raising dairy cattle and turkeys, but after 10 years he changed professions and became Science Department Head at Georgetown District High School - a job he loved for over 30 years before he retired. He lived an inspiring life of service to his community, coaching youth in soccer, basketball and hockey, and sitting on many local boards including founding member and Board Chair of Georgetown & District Memorial Hospital. He loved the outdoors and was an avid downhill skier, camper, hiker and gardener. His greatest joy in life was his family - nothing he liked more than having his family around him celebrating life's events. He will be deeply missed. A private service for immediate family will be held on Friday, June 1, 2012. Condolences and memories may be forwarded to [email protected] In lieu of flowers, donations would be appreciated to the World Wildlife Federation.

Pat and family,
I was so sorry to hear of Tom's passing. What a gentleman and how I enjoyed the visits with both of you when I took Anne to Kingston. Pat I do not know how to get in touch with you since you left Port Hope. I would love to talk to you and properly tell you how sorry I am. If you would like to keep in touch call me at 905-877-5731

All the teachers of that era at GDHS were great, but Mr. Beer was a stand-out! He cared about his students a great deal, as I personally well know, and was able to keep order (sometimes a tough job) while preserving a terrific sense of humour. I remember pulling one stunt in his class that got a big laugh, and he laughed the loudest. After the laughing died down he said "That was very funny Mark -- and now I'll see you at 4 for a detention !" That got another laugh.

He'll be missed, and very fondly remembered.

I was so sorry to hear of Tom's passing. I remember what a good skier he was from my days at Caledon Ski Club. My parents, Noreen and Gord McHenry, had many great times at the club with Tom and Pat.

I attended GDHS but did not have Tom as a teacher. I was able to assist the Beers in selling a building lot on their property and then their home which allowed them to move closer to their family. It was always interesting to visit their home on the 5th Line as they were both very artistic. Our sincere condolences to the family.

I have fond memories of Mr. Beer in the science classes at Georgetown High School in the early 60's. Met him a few years ago and he remembered my name. Remarkable man and teacher.
