THOMAS HARVEY Obituary

THOMAS CLIMIE HARVEY On January 14, 2014, Thomas Climie Harvey took his final bow, but left behind an extraordinary life. Predeceased by first wife Patricia Lawlor Harvey, and beloved sister Margaret (Pearl) Bonner, Tom is survived by wife Roberta Bishop Harvey, son Doug (Carmen), step-father to Kane family children Bruce (Connie), Rob (Lynne), Gord (Sandra), Doug (Jan), Buffy (Glenn), Martha (Joe) and Grandpa to dozens of grandchildren who will most fondly remember him as the "Evil Prince Malokeo" of 1988's Once Upon a Giant, a Harvey/Kane holiday classic. A visitation will be held at the HIGHLAND FUNERAL HOME, Markham Chapel, 10 Cachet Woods Court, 905-887-8600, on Saturday, January 18, 2014 from 10:30 - 12:30 p.m., with a funeral service to follow at 12:30 p.m. Burial at Highland Memory Gardens. Tom was born in 1924 in Coatbridge, Scotland and moved with his parents Alex, Elizabeth and sister Pearl to Toronto shortly thereafter. He delighted in his Scots heritage, and certainly didn't shy away from Robbie Burns quotes and his bagpipes the second an opportunity arose. A veteran of WWII, Tom set out to join the Navy to entertain the troops and brought laughter and relief to his fellow compatriots in troubled times. One sticking point came during his tour of duty, while performing some drills he accidentally ended up overboard in an incident that was only compounded by his inability to swim... For the remainder of his life, Tom never learned to swim but spent numerous hours tinkering around his pool which he kept pristine for all the friends and family that congregated there during the hot, summer months. To the kids shock and amusement, many performances spontaneously erupted in that same pool, fully-clothed. Tom will most likely be remembered as a Canadian character actor, and comedy foil. Having studied broadcasting at Lorne Greene's Academy of Radio Arts in the early 40s his passion, talent, and quick wit resulted in a career that has amassed more than 3000 TV and Film roles in Canada and the US, and over 2000 Radio Dramas since 1948. His most noted roles, include The Luck of Ginger Coffey, Wayne and Shuster, Bizarre/Super Dave, Strange Brew, and his last role in Away from Her. A sense of joy and mischief will be the legacy Tom leaves. An avid wordsmith, a generous, loyal and compassionate husband, father and friend who never met an audience he didn't love. We will miss all the laughter, and cherish all the memories. The family would like to thank Tom's lifelong friends and wonderful staff and caregivers at Sunnybrook who every day looked past illness and saw the Tom we loved. Donations to the Sunnybrook Foundation at the Dorothy Macham Home would be appreciated.

I regret not being able to say goodbye, Grandpa Tom, but I am grateful to have been part of your extraordinary life. You had a major impact on me and the entire Kane family. We will always remember your joyful and playful personality and wit. I will treasure the memory of you, and continue such traditions as watching "Once Upon a Giant," with my children and grand-children, and laugh at your wonderful delivery of the Evil Prince Malokeo. I will always think of you each and every time I watch the play “Annie,” and remember us singing “tomorrow, tomorrow, I love ya, tomorrow; it's only a day away." Until that day when I see you again, I know you'll be watching over us all.

Our family sends our sincerest condolences to the Harvey Family. We got to know that impish spirit at Sunnybrook and we will miss his humor and wit. My dad was a huge fan of Tom's and I watched with dad a lot of his fabulous shows. We will miss our wonderful neighbor Tom. He was truly a Canadian treasure. What a comedic genius. Love to the whole family. A big loss!

I can't even remember exactly when I first met Tom. It was either 1960 or 61.
Then over the years we worked together on several productions starting with The
Forest Rangers which was 50 years ago.
A warm, lovely man and a terrific actor.
And somebody with a genuine and truly great smile. I am sorry not to be able to make his service, but I will be there in spirit. My condolences and sympathies are with his entire family.
He will be missed.

My prayers are with the family.
