Thomas HENDY Obituary

HENDY, Thomas Corkett BA, LLB, QC - May 17, 1943 - November 12, 2014 Peacefully after a long illness, which he endured with patience and good humour. Son of the late Robert Ian Hendy and Margaret (Corky). He leaves his wife and partner of 46 years Judy (nee Elo) and beloved daughters, Jennifer (Cam Eades), Meredith (Sean Warwick) and Alison (James Coulombe), grandchildren Heather and Thomas Keery, Ryan and Braden Warwick and Nicholas and Mira Coulombe, sisters Bev Murdison (Andy), Julie Cheesbrough and Sue Fleming (Jock) and mother-in-law Helen Elo, sister-in-law Chris Elo and brother-in-law Kevin Kelly. Cherished uncle to numerous nieces and nephews as well as their partners. He was an extra father and grandfather to Bernadette, Liam and Kate Jarvis. Tom attended Upper Canada College and Trinity College at University of Toronto followed by Osgoode Hall Law School. Tom loved the law and had a brilliant legal mind. He mentored young lawyers whenever they came to him with a problem and he devoted whatever time was required to support them. He often took cases for little or no financial reward simply because it was the right thing to do. He was a member of the Zeta Psi fraternity, friend of The Lorne Scots, past President of the Brampton Georgetown PC Association, past President of The Peel Law Association and founding President and longtime board member of the John Howard Society of Peel. Tom was a loving father and was devoted to his three girls and six grandchildren. His greatest accomplishment by far was his family. We will always cherish our many ski trips, times spent at the Caledon Ski Club and our memories at Hendy Hof Too. Tom had a love of dogs and was affectionately known as "Uncle Cookie" to his four legged friends. His sense of humour and quick wit was enjoyed by all of his many friends and family. The family will receive friends at the Butcher Funeral Home, 5399 Main St. S., Erin from 2:00 - 4:00 and 7:00 - 9:00 p.m. on Tuesday, November 18, 2014. A funeral and celebration of Tom's life will be held at the Butcher Funeral Home on Wednesday, November 19 at 11:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Lorne Scots Band, 2 Chapel St., Brampton, ON L6W 2H1, John Howard Society of Peel, 100 Queen St. W., Brampton, ON L6X 1A4 or to the charity of your choice.

Judy and Family,

I'm sorry to hear of Tom's passing. Having gotten to know him over the course of the past 15 years, he was a true gentlemen and always good to share a laugh with. He'll truly be missed.

Dear Judy and Family:

I knew Tom for many years as a lawyer and as a friend. It is right to say that Tom had a brilliant legal mind. I always marvelled at the way he would come into the room to conduct an examination of a witness without a single piece of paper in front of him and ask questions which were on point, faithful to the facts and which demonstrated a complete mastery of the subject and the witness.

And yet, Tom was modest and self-effacing. He gave credit to others but not to himself.

Tom was a person of enormous honesty and integrity. He was always true to his word.

Tom had a wonderful sense of humour and fun. He did the very best he could for all of his clients and, win, lose or draw, they knew that they had been given the best effort anyone could expect.

A great guy.
