Thomas HNATIW Obituary

HNATIW, Thomas Gregory Michael - On July 30, 2012 at the age of 53. Tom was a deeply devoted family man who believed it was his purpose in life to raise a family, and that he did with Debbie, his wife of 23 years, first in Hamilton, then Milton and settling in Oakville since 2005. Tom was a very successful television producer and personality, and was considered the quintessential Car Guy by all in the North American automotive and racing community. He is survived by his wife Debbie, and his two sons Nick and Wyatt. Donations are welcomed in his memory to the scholarship program at the May Court Club of Oakville. A private family gathering will take place at a later date.

I knew Tom not from the car days but from back in the restaurant days. Tom was running Scotland Yard, I was at the Organ Grinder. Great conversations with Tom about cars (I think he had just bought a Shelby Mustang, me an old TR3)and music. Just the most open, honest, genuinely intested in you person I've ever met. Saw Tom some years ago at Toronto Auto Show and it was like we had just left the bar the night before. My sincere condolences; he will be missed by all who met him.

Tom and I met in 2004 at Sebring International Raceway when I was blessed to start my first World Challenge GT race. We became instant friends. By October of 2004, we had spent a lot of time together at the race tracks and in the broadcast booths. Tom included me in a Sports Car Revolution episode that we filmed together in Kansas. Everything I did with Tom was fun, even working hard and spending a lot of hours on tasks were fun with Tom's involvement. Tom was always there for me, he was very supportive and found ways to help lift me up when things were not going as best they could or as I had hoped. I spent time with Tom at Road Atlanta in April of 2012. It never mattered how much time past, when we would get together, we would pick up right where we had left off the previous visit. It is hard to accept that Tom is gone, but the day will come when we will see each other again, and I know we will pick up right where we left off.

Tom, you are a tremendous loss to the motoring world! Your passion and humor will live on through those of us you touched! "Do you need a car like this? NO, Do you want a car like this? Oh Yeah!" RIP Tom

Tom hired me for my first real job out of college. He was such a positive influence on my life and never failed to listen when I asked for help.

Tom will always hold a special place in the hearts of me and my wife.

RIP Tom. What a great loss; you are a great man and you are missed. It was my great pleasure to be welcomed, as you did thousands, into your incredibly large circle of friends. You were the driving force for Motorsport in Canada and it would not have grown at the rate it did without you... I'd love to hear just one more of your jokes (or snide remarks about someone's driving; usually mine). Thanks for all you've done. My condolences to Debbie, Wyatt and Nick and my gratitude for generously sharing Tom with the rest of us wankers...

My sincere condolences to Tom's family for their sad loss.
I was a driver in the Firestone Firehawk Endurance Championship in Eastern Canada when I knew Tom.
He was a very talented and funny guy whose contribution to the Firehawk Series and all its participants was an inspiration to everyone who was privileged to know him.
The racing world will miss him greatly.

I met Tom when I was in the Firestone Firehawk series in the late 80's and early 90's. He was the liason between the series and the entrants and he was the nicest, kindest and most generous guy I ever met in Pro Racing. I would see him here and there through the years and he always had a grat story to share. I was at the TransAm race in Reno years ago and he let my friend and I join him in the booth while he called the race. It was unbelievable to watch, here was this guy who was so funny and low key calling this race live and throwinging in background on the drivers while the action was so hectic. It was at that moment that I realized not only how incredibly bright he was but how he really did like people and took the time out to learn small things about them just because of it. That is a great legacy, I will always remember what a super person he was...
