It is sad to hear of Tom McQuiston's passing. His wife Ella was a part of a special Collingwood group of girls that grew up together and maintained life-long friendships. I can remember many occasions where they would all get together to share good conversation and many, many laughs. While Mr. McQuiston possessed an impressive resume, he will be best remembered as being a great guy.

I was a student of Mr. McQuiston at Northview Heights in grades eleven and twelve, in 1968 and 1969. He was an inspiration to me and instilled in me a life long love of history and things historical. He challenged me to be better every day, and I still see him as the most influential teacher I ever had in twenty years of formal education. I owe him much. May he rest in peace and with thanks from a very grateful student.

What a wonderful man! A good friend and fellow teacher. I learned a lot from Tom. He was a real gentleman.

Mr. McQuiston was my homeroom and history teacher at Northview. He was a terrific teacher and a wonderful person. Whenever I did anything silly in class (which was quite regularly), he would call me 'Patricia'. He had a great sense of humour, and the most congenial smile. I babysat his children a couple of times as well. I held great admiration for him as both a teacher and a person. My deepest condolences to his family. He was a special man. Kindest regards, Patti Jameson (O'Neill)

Tom truly lived life in a beautiful way. I was always touched by his humor, kindness, interest in all matter of things, and big heart. My condolences to all of his family and all those who will miss him.

Tom was very special in my life: chauffeur, friend to get lost with, Hamburger host in his lovely peaceful garden, the latest book to share; but perhaps, if I must choose among his attributes,, an extraordinarily wise and thoughtful Seeker always open to new theological possibilities, Bible in hand the latest discussion tome in the other. I will miss him hugely!

While I first met Tom (through the St. Matthew's connection) back around the year 2000, it was only in the last ten years or so that I got to know him better -- and what a privilege it was. We were part of an informal discussion group that met up every couple of months in each other's homes to talk about the books we were reading and share any interesting articles we'd come across. The ostensible subject each time was a rather broad one -- God -- but often we would take quite a while to warm to our theme. Instead, at the start of each session we would simply talk about Life -- arguably the same subject -- and enjoy catching up on everyone's news, typically about friends and family. Occasionally, guests who had joined us for an evening, unfamiliar with this slow-windup routine of ours, would get a bit antsy with all the preliminaries and insist, rather brusquely, that we get down to business. Their impatience was understandable, but what they did not always seem to understand was that, as Dickens famously put it, Mankind was our business, as were charity, mercy, forbearance [and] benevolence. In other words, (Dickens again) the common welfare. Tom always understood that, implicitly, and made it his business to extend those virtues and that courtesy to everyone around him. He was so sharp and so funny, so fair-minded and so kind. He will not "be missed," as they say. Because he is missed already.

How blessed I was to have Tom in my life at St. Matthew's. My condolences and my prayers are offered to Ella and the family. Tom, a deeply faithful man with a progressive mindset, caring warmth, and wise counsel was a gift to the parish--and to me, his parish priest for many years. A Saturday wedding means I can not be with you all in person. 'Deep peace of the Running Wave to you. Deep peace of the Flowing Air to you. Deep peace of the Quiet Earth to you. Deep peace of the Shining Stars to you. Deep peace of the Son of Peace to you.'
