WAI LAM Obituary

LAM, WAI YU Wai Yu (Irene) Lam was born on April 24, 1953, in Hong Kong. Affectionately known as Luilui (Girly Girl), she passed on peacefully with her family and close relatives by her side on April 2, 2022, in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. She spent the early years of her life in the Homantin neighborhood in Kowloon and attended the Methodist School. She graduated from the Chinese University of Hong Kong in 1978 with a Bachelor of Social Sciences degree, majoring in social work and minoring in fine art. Her lifelong career in helping people included working with mentally challenged children and marginalized people facing severe financial hardship. Even in her last moment of life, she tried to ensure that another patient in the hospital where she stayed got the necessary help. Wai Yu was an avid amateur artist. She was especially fond of the paintings of Vincent Van Gogh and did some fine works of landscape painting. Travelling around the world was another of her ambitious endeavours. She had visited many countries in Asia, Europe and North America. Wai Yu was a hard worker and faced adversity with equanimity. While being humble about her own achievements, she was proud of the work ethics of her children. She was always courteous and compassionate, with the ability to empathize with people. She was never angry or depressed while being ill. She was primarily supported by her devotion to the Catholic faith and her own willpower, while also being lifted by her relatives and friends. Wai Yu was predeceased by her father, Mr. Yuen Lee Chan. She is survived by her children, Simon Yu Hin and Joyce Nga Hei; her husband, Hinwah Benedict (Ben); her mother, Ms. Yuet Ming Chiu; her sisters, Orina, Rennie and Fanny; her brothers, Ken, Garry and Alex; and the countless relatives, friends and people that Wai Yu touched throughout her life.

When I lost someone I love, I gain an angel I know.

Those we love don't go away
They walk beside us every day
Unseen, unheard, but always near
Still loved, still missed and very dear

from Rennie (Mui Mui) - your dear sister

Irene was a beautiful sister

Irene was a beautiful daughter
She cared for her parents when she was not well
She was glad that her father lived a long life and about her mother´s longevity
Irene was a beautiful daughter

Irene was a beautiful wife
When I was briefly hospitalized you had those beautiful panda eyes for two weeks
When I was involved in anti-discrimination activities you were worried that I would be murdered by bigots
Irene was my beloved beautiful wife

Irene was a beautiful mother
Under the punishing weather one hand pushing a stroller with Joyce in it and another hand holding an umbrella with Simon in tow you took them everywhere when I was at work
Tough job but you enjoyed every minute of it
You spent most of her energy ensuring their safety and healthy development
Without complaints or regrets
From the beginning of their lives you showered them with unconditional love
You brought things online for them in the last week of her life when you could no longer go mall shopping
Irene was the beautiful mother dearly loved by Simon and Joyce

Irene was a beautiful person
In appearance and in essence
You lived an authentic life
You were a beautiful person
You are a beautiful person
You will be a beautiful person
In my mind and in my heart
