I only just found out about Walter's death and I am deeply saddened....but truly enriched for knowing this wonderful man. He hired me out of university for a job at Gallery Moos and it was the most educational and crazy and wonderful job I ever had....thank you, Walter, for taking me under your wing. Since then, Walter has been a mentor for my Art career - in teaching and running a gallery myself - and I owe a great deal to his wisdom, humour and caring. I will miss seeing you on my Toronto visits to catch up on news and get advice, Walter....my thoughts are with your family.

Correction...the police officer stood at attention and saluted as Walter entered the cemetary!

I don't think many people noticed this but as Walter entered the cemetary the lead police office (there were three in total) stood straight at attention and held it for a long long time...really straight...not one of Walter's pinky finger salutes....I went up to a policeman after and asked about it...He said that is reserved for a very important person or a head of State....I said how about "Head of State of the art"..he said absolutely....and just so you know right over the hill from where Walter is resting is one of the most beautiful golf courses in Canada. Maple Downs Golf Club....near the 10th fairway....My favorite installation at 136 Yorkville is when they re-created a log cabin located far out into the bush from northern Ontario in the second room of the gallery...down to the most minute detail....you entered the room and then into this cabin....it was really rustic and rough....spider webs on the windows...pot of coffee on an old stove...sodier's cot....cigarette buts...old coffee mugs...even sound effects...looked like a Group Of Seven dream cottage in the most isolated bush...installed right across the street from the swanky Four Seasons Hotel on Yorkville....hillarious....I came out of there and Ken Forsythe was standing right there...I said THAT cabin is brilliant and Ken said " We know".

Many times I was with Walter at an International Art Show in New York and as soon as a major art dealer, especially a dealer from Europe, caught site of Walter, even if they were in mid-conversation with someone else they would immediately stop what they were doing to come over and greet him....I wish he had stayed up in Yorkville where he started and was appreciated for what he did in the arts instead of moving to that remote outpost in Siberia guarded with only one sentry the incredibly loyal Svetlana...how can we all replace that wit in our lives?!....to use one of Walter's favorite words as he rolled his eyes upwards...It's "unbelievable!"...Indeed Walter indeed...pax vobiscum.

I've only just discovered that Walter is dead. I was reading the Globe to my mother. This afternoon. I said Walter Moos is dead Mom! She said Walter who dear. Walter Cronkite? Who was he dear. (Mom is forgetful) Walter Moos, Mom I said, remember, the art gallery person. He told me once ….well, never mind. When I was an art student, back in the day, I wanted to see an exhibition at Gallery Moos. I arrived at the door, around 4pm. A nice man was arriving at the same time. He held the door for me. Just like Dad. I ran up the stairs. The joint was empty man! The man behind me was Walter Moos (I found out later). Oh dear, said I (fresh from Ottawa, perhaps naïve) am I early. Oh don't worry, said the man, we're just setting it up. You can stay and watch. Truly a great fellow!!! Who else do you know who would hold the door for an art student.

Walter was wise and kind – a gentle giant. When I was young, we would visit the Moos family, ring their doorbell and wait – the door would open very slowly, then just a hand would appear, often with just the baby finger sticking up. We would walk right into the hallway and only then would Walter emerge from behind the door. He did it every time we came. He was mischievous, he was funny, I was enchanted. Walter was wise and kind – a gentle giant. He will be deeply missed. My deepest sympathies and love to Martha, Michel and David.

Favorite saying of Walter....."Canadians are visually challenged.".....favorite word....schnookleberger..I figured you had to be pretty good to be a schnookleberger......"Walter and I never signed a piece of paper....everything was on a handshake!"....Ken Danby....I swear it's like burying Mozart....you always felt like you were climbing Mount Olympus at 136 Yorkville....Gerry, Ken and of course Walter...you always had to bring your "A" game...and unlike other art dealers this was a real dream team ...kind and considerate and always trying to encourage the arts....great memory...hanging out with Walter in New York and going to an art fair....happy surfing Walter.

Dear Martha, Michel and David~ my thoughts are so very much with you to hear this sad news about Walter. I close my eyes and I hear his voice - both - in the passionate way he would describe an exciting piece of art, an idea, a discovery - and then - in the soft, elegant and sonorous murmur which would waft over our fence from #54 -( along with the delectable smells of Martha's cooking.) Walter was a consummate art lover defining the essence of it's depth of importance in every aspect of his life... not for a moment was he pompous or precious... he had such a wry and whimsical way of communicating ... always there was a twinkle in his eye - revealing what was in his heart. And yet - there was a lighthearted air of mystery about him too! He was quintessentially elegant and whimsical and funny and kind. We were so proud to be his neighbour for over 3 decades, from sharing house and garden air space and fence, and I learned countless lessons about taste and ease of style and beauty - that I carry with me to this day - along with delight in the art of living
I send you all my love and empathy,
Yours,
Veronica

Walter was the most incredible man. He was always teaching me something new. He was generous, passionate and always a bit of a jokester. It is hard to believe we knew each other for almost 30 years. My thoughts and prayers are with his family. Patric
