Walter Tilden Obituary

WALTER BENEDICT TILDEN CM., C.St.J., B.Comm., D.Sc.Mil. (Hon.) Died at home in Toronto on July 9, 2008 soon after his 80th Birthday. He is survived by his wife Jane (Brenchley); his children Bruce, David, Jill, Roger, Joanne, Robert and his wife Donna; his grandchildren Emma, Molly, Benjamin, and William; and his brother Robert. He was predeceased by his infant son Andrew, and by his brothers Sam and Ted. Walter was born in Montreal to Sam and Sylvia Tilden. He graduated from Westmount High School, Royal Canadian Naval College (Royal Roads) in Victoria, and McGill University (B.Comm. 1950). His entire working career was in the car rental business first in Montreal, then Ottawa and Toronto. He served on many business and professional organizations. In 1993, he and his brother Ted were inducted into the Canadian Business Hall of Fame. Walter's Community Service was constant and varied. For more than 45 years, he served Scouts Canada eventually as National President and the first-ever Chairman Emeritus. For Distinguished Service, he received Scouts Canada's highest honours: the Silver Acorn and the Silver Wolf. Other Honours include the Queen's Silver and Golden Jubilee Medals, an Honorary Degree from Royal Roads, and Membership in The Order of Canada. Always the sportsman and outdoorsman, Walter won letters at McGill in golfing, rugby, skiing, squash, and water polo. Fishing, hunting, hiking, and canoeing were life-long passions. He also became a keen and knowledgeable collector of Canadian landscape art. Walter's devotion to his family and country and a host of friends around the world speak of a life truly well lived. Cremation has taken place and interment of ashes will be in Dunany, Quebec where the Tilden family has spent so many happy summers. A Memorial Service of Thanksgiving will be held in Toronto on Monday, July 21, 2008 at Eglinton St. George's United Church, 35 Lytton Blvd. followed by a reception. For those who so wish, memorial donations to Scouts Canada will be very much appreciated.

Dear Jane and Bruce,

It was with great sadness that we learned of Walter's passing.

After giving me the opportunity by moving from Europe and becoming employed in the so proudly run Canadian Family business, I experienced Walter's strong leadership, his discipline and work ethics.
Walter was a true Icon for me, my Family will remember some good times we shared away from the office.
I am thankfull for the many personnal advices as well as the opportunities that was given to me.

We wish you and the Family all the strenght in the months to follow.

Hello Jane:
I can not begin to express the sadness that we all feel at losing Walter. As you well know, Walter was one of the finest gentleman who never had a mean to say about anyone. Marilyn, Sylvie, Chief Guy, Quentin, all the guides and myself will miss Walter so much over the years.
Out thoughts are with you and your family during this time of sadness. Quentin was so happy and proud that you and Walter were able to attend his wedding last September. Please take care of yourself.

With love and affection,

My dear Jane, What a very long time it is since we have been in touch and now I write having learnt of the distressing news of Walter's death. My goodness, what a lot he accomplished and I am very proud to have known you both. I am only sorry that I never met your children and I would be grateful if you would convey my deepest sympathy to them. It is such ages since we all got married and I remember the delightful time we had in Ottawa with you so many years ago. I have been in New Zealand now for some 37 years and the country has been more than kind to me. Take care of yourself and know that I am thinking of you. Love, Phyllida

The Tilden Family: I am sorry to learn of Walter's passing. I had known Walter here in Ottawa when a member of City Council and later had the pleasure of working with him and the car Rental organization when Minister of Industry and Tourisum here in Ontario. A MAN with such a GREAT and POSITIVE attitude. His advice was always greatly appreciated.
