WARREN GREIG CHARLES WATSON

WARREN WATSON Obituary

WARREN GREIG CHARLES WATSON Warren passed away unexpectedly on October 24, 2012 at the age of 70. He was a complex, passionate, caring individual who touched the hearts and minds of many. Even at a young age, Warren had an old soul. Before he was 10, he began to look over his father's shoulder to learn bookkeeping and business management. Warren had found his calling. Warren's career took off, at times travelling up to 300 days a year. He qualified as a CA at Clarkson Gordon (now Ernst & Young). Later at Drake International, he headed up all North American Operations and managed world-wide internal operations. With significant corporate turnaround experience at Clarkson Gordon, he exploded into the world of corporate recovery as Executive Vice President and CEO at Husky Injection Molding Systems. From then on with the help of his mentor George Hitchman (then Deputy Chairman of the Bank of Nova Scotia), he became, in his words, a company doctor, "helping ailing companies get well again working on behalf of all the shareholders". His signature turnaround accomplishments included Spar Aerospace Limited -- at the time when the "Canadarm" was first introduced to the US space program, the restructuring of Canada's East Coast fishing industry, Graham Fibreglass, Canada Cup and Yorkbridge Packaging in Pennsylvania. He participated in 34 corporate recoveries, managed 26 acquisitions and sat on the board of 21 companies in both Canada and the United States. Aili Suurallik came into Warren's life more than 20 years ago and they were married in 1998. She shared his love of travel and their day was not complete unless discussions led to where to go next, what place had they not yet seen and explored and who should be invited to join them in yet another adventure. He will be forever remembered by Aili and his five children - Laurie, Carolyn, Kevin, Natalie and Lianne. Warren loved to advise, counsel, instruct, challenge and introduce them to the world he wished them to explore and love as he had. He is also survived by eight grandchildren - Andrew, Justin, Lindsay, Carly, Shannon, Shaun, Christopher and Samantha and three great-grandchildren - Liam, Olivia and Mason. His love of his family always came first. He will be missed by so many whom he mentored, influenced and loved. A private service was held on Tuesday, October 30th. Plans are underway for a celebratory memorial in the spring of 2013. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Canadian Network for International Surgery, Suite 105, 1985 West Broadway, Vancouver, BC, Canada V6J 4Y3, donations to go to "Dalla Lana IIWCC Africa Member's Project".
