WILLIAM DUNLOP Obituary

WILLIAM (BILL) ALEXANDER DUNLOP 1932 - 2016 Husband, Father, Grandfather and Friend On October 30, 2016, Bill passed away after a long and very courageous struggle with Parkinson's. Bill worked tirelessly to battle the daily challenges of Parkinson's and he did so with a strong and positive attitude, never losing his sense of humour. His commitment to overcome the challenges of this disease never wavered. He leaves his wife and partner of 28 years, Sheila (Harrison); his daughter Paula Dunlop and her husband Andrew MacEachern; two grandchildren Bryn and Cade and many close friends. After graduating from the University of Toronto (B.Com, MCom), he spent his entire career in the field of Information Technology, consulting as well as developing and building applications. Bill retired as a Partner with Ernst & Young in 1992 after 22 years. He always fondly remembered his earlier positions with IBM, Procter & Gamble, Marconi and the Toronto Board of Education. Bill loved the simple things in life. As a parent he enjoyed the long and full dinner time conversations that he had with his children. He always encouraged a good discussion or a debate. Many hours were spent visiting with friends and having great social gatherings around the pool on Lytton Blvd. and Neighbourhood Nights on Felbrigg Ave. In later years, travel to France and Spain were annual highlights. His three daughters were a true joy in Bill's life. Together with Barb, his first wife, he was able to provide a loving and fulfilling life despite the health issues that Lee Ann and Nicole faced due to cystic fibrosis. Tragically Lee Ann died at age 17 and Nicole at 18 due to this terrible disease. Many fond memories were created at the Dunlop family cottage on the Rideau Lake. Bill grew up spending time at the Rideau with his cousins Bruce Dunlop (deceased, 2001) and Robert Dunlop. Later he enjoyed weekends with his children and nieces and nephews. It was a very special place to Bill. Bill was blessed with a solid circle of friends throughout his life: his lifelong university friend Dr. Fred Bolling (Valerie); many great neighbours on Lytton Blvd.; long term friends Peter and Heather Simpson, Doreen and Walter Rosmarin (deceased, 2012), Dan and Barb Sydor, Frances (Bruce deceased, 2001), Leslie (deceased, 2012) and Alex Dunlop, Helen Irene Dunlop (deceased, 2012), Randy and Kate MacDougall, David and Claire Scrivens, Janie Dunn, Brian and Tanya Hogan, Freddy and Leigh Atkinson; supporting neighbours on Felbrigg Ave.; his pals at the YMCA; and Sheila's family (Ruby Hodgson, Jane, John and Katie Gregg and Doug and Corinne Swallow). His warmth, love, humour, wit, advice and friendship will be greatly missed. Bill and Sheila thank Dr. Howard Rudner, Dr. Maurice Levitan, Dr. Mark Guttman and the North York General Hospital Seniors' Health Centre (Day Hospital Program) for helping us deal with the progression of Parkinson's. We also would like to extend heartfelt thanks to our dear caregivers: Isabel, Bernardita, Salvador, Dina, Evangeline, Adeline, Christina, Veronica, Virgil, Ida, April and Nurse Ashita. The loving care provided by all these people allowed Bill to enjoy life at home. It was Bill's wish that a Celebration of Life be held in lieu of a funeral. It will take place at MacLean Estate at a later date. In Bill's memory, you may wish to consider a donation to Parkinson Canada, Crohn's & Colitis Canada or Cystic Fibrosis Canada - three diseases that were of great significance to Bill.

A Goodbye taken at a doorway when you're never to see someone again can only be inadequate. There's nothing to cover the rift of a lifetime's contact. It's not the gravity of a minute or a year or the faith placed in each other's children and loved ones. It's the silly structures you alone have had. It's the sharing with Barb, Joan and all our children. It's being in France with Sheila and Val.

I no longer have an opponent for the one-on-one game DUNBOL invented sometime 1951/52/53 , won equally by both of us. Who else knew the rules and the challenge to combat?

It's the thunder-warmed rain onshore by Lake Huron's Canadian waters where we walked one night with all our children, who had no fears because we were there.

It's the cold martini and oysters taken together while we were watching the ravages of somebody's real war on television. It's the political arguments over breakfast.

It's the five hundred and thirty four pages of a two-man biography by people who never tired of each other.

I remember Billy Dunlop and I remember him fondly. I have not seen him for over 60 years and it's a pity because for all of that time I've wanted to tell him that I've forgiven him for beating me in a spelling contest at Allenby Public School in 1944.
(Still think I should have won though).
