WILLIAM HENDERSON Obituary

HENDERSON, WILLIAM ALEXANDER (SANDY) MacDONALD May 31, 1950 - September 14, 2022 With profound sadness, the family of Sandy Henderson announce his death on September 14, 2022, at Mt Sinai Hospital, Toronto, following a short series of illnesses. His passing leaves an enormous and sad gap in the lives of many people. He was predeceased by his beloved wife, Patty (2015), and is survived by four children, Emma (Scott) of St. Albert, Alberta, Kate (Ben), of Gravenhurst, Taylor Henderson and Graeme Henderson, Toronto. Sandy was the third child of the late Rev. Bill and Peggy Henderson. He was predeceased by his younger sister, Clara (2016) and is survived by older siblings, the Rev. John Henderson (Dorothy), Waterloo, and Marg Henderson, Toronto. Sandy always had a fondness for sports and fitness. After playing football at the University of Toronto, Sandy made his way south on campus to Hart House and worked for more than 30 years as the Athletic Director. During this time he also displayed a deep commitment to Hart House Farm in Caledon, Ontario, where he could be found cutting Christmas trees, piling wood, or tending to the farm. Sandy's love of sports continued in the later years, where he worked with Covermaster Inc. Above all else, Sandy will be remembered as a people person. He had a remarkable memory and delighted in connecting people together. He had a tender spot for elderly and vulnerable people and often warmed their hearts with some of his fresh home baking. His life was full of family, food, sports, laughter, and faith. He had diverse interests and loved sharing the product of his interests with others. Namely bee keeping (Bruce Beach honey), baking especially countless fruit pies, buns and scones and homemade maple syrup. Sandy loved stream fishing and hunted for ginseng and morels in secret places which could not be revealed. He cherished playing hockey each week with longtime friends. He was an elder at Trinity York Mills Presbyterian Church, Toronto. Bruce Beach, on Lake Huron, held a special place in Sandy's heart. As a teenager, he delivered bottles of milk along the beach for Kincardine Dairy, a job which was the perfect fit for his outgoing personality. He could talk to every resident of the beach before noon and, for many summers following, he did odd jobs for cottagers. Sandy's parents, relatives and, later, Patty's relatives, all had cottages nearby, when Sandy and Patty built a beautiful home on the sandy shores of Lake Huron. The laughter and warmth of the social gatherings were legendary. Sandy never missed the Kincardine Pipe Parade on Saturday evenings, Sunday morning baseball at the beach and, at four on Sunday afternoon, you would find him in a little grove on Bruce Beach setting out benches and hymnals for an outdoor Sunday worship. His engaging personality, his extensive friendships, deep loyalties, and his joie de vivre will be remembered and cherished by all who knew him. Thank you to Dr. Woo, Dr. Colman and Dr. Moore at Mt. Sinai and the attentive nurses. Thanks also to the loving care he received at Toronto Rehab on 9S. Visitation: Thompson Funeral Home, 530 Industrial Parkway S. Through my friendship with Sandy's younger sister, Clara, I had the privilege of chatting with Sandy here and there through the years - experiencing his humour, and incredible zest for life, along with witnessing the abiding love he had for his kids as well as the beauty of Patty and Sandy moving through life together. Clara shared many happy stories about Sandy as she did about all of her siblings who were her heart, as well as her nieces and nephews, and parents. Sandy's light will continue to move through this world, illuminating what being part of a family and a community can mean. To John and Marg, and Sandy's children, may you feel at least some comfort in knowing how widely Sandy's life touched the lives of so many.

We lived in Walkerton in the early '50s, and Sandy's dad was our Minister. I can still picture Sandy Bill, as he was known in those days---the little red-headed boy who sat along the pew (and up one) from us each Sunday. He and I were both only three or four years of age at that time, and often tried to chat together in Church (probably loudly!?). His mom always gave him a carrot, and my mom gave me a cookie---to keep us occupied/quiet during the Service. That's going back a few years and our paths took us in different directions, but we reconnected by chance at Trinity Presbyterian in North York many years later. It was a special joy to hold his twin sons as young babies the Sunday they were baptized at Trinity---and Sandy's Dad, Bill, took part in the Service. In one of our chats at Trinity, Sandy and I reminisced about our very sweet and memorable Sunday School teacher in Walkerton---Miss Cane. We both had such wonderful memories of those days almost 70 years ago now. I was so sorry to hear of Sandy's passing and extend my deepest sympathy to his family. He was a gem of a person. "God gave us memories so that we may have roses in December."

As manager of Hart House Theatre during Sandy's tenure as Director of Athletics, a strong friendship developed, as we both shared the same special feelings for Hart House and maintaining goals of leadership for the many students that crossed out paths. He was a kind and thoughtful person who always had a smile and kind word for everyone. It was indeed a privilege to have called him a dear friend. He will be greatly missed by all those who had the good fortune to have known him.

Sandy was the biggest bargain the University of Toronto ever had. One man ran an entire athletic facility and recreational athletics program for over 25 years. He and his mentor, Carman Guild, oversaw the Hart House Farm operation during the same time period. He was devoted to Hart House and to the University of Toronto. One of the great unsung heroes of that great good place and its heart - Hart House. I am sure that he is charming the angels and has a wink and a smile for each one and is sharing an apple jack with Carman. Thank you Sandy.

Remembering fondly times spent with Sandy Bill and his Dad fishing and many chats at Bruce Beach with the honey jars and recollections over his milk run. Always friendly and cheerful. Will indeed be missed.
