William Rowland Obituary

ROWLAND, William Robert - (1933 - 2009) It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of W. Robert Rowland (a.k.a. Ro, Rolly, Bob'll, Bob, Dad and Bubba) on July 24, 2009. Bob was a dedicated teacher, loyal friend, caring father, devoted grandfather and loving husband. Always ready with tools in hand to help anyone, his generosity of spirit will be deeply missed. Bob will be fondly remembered by his children - Michael (Joanne), Julie (John), Sara (Jean-Pierre), Susan (Ian) and Hugh (Kim), his grandchildren - Jennifer, Christopher, Jackie, Stefan, Emilie, Hugh, Sara, Nicolas, Allison and Gillian, and his brother - Tom (Dorothy, deceased). He was predeceased by his loving wife Hilary and sister Mary (Jack, deceased). The family would like to thank his many physicians including Dr. Kim Morrison, Dr. Donald Norris and Dr. Richard Brodie, his palliative care team at Providence Healthcare and special friend and guide Neelam Bains. Friends and family may visit the Sherrin Funeral Home, 873 Kingston Road, Toronto (between Victoria Park and Main Street) on Friday, July 31 from 1-3 and 6-8 p.m. A memorial service will be held at the Balmy Beach Club (Beech Avenue and the lake - www.balmybeachclub.com) on Monday, August 3 at 11 a.m. with a luncheon reception to follow. In lieu of flowers, donations to Sleeping Children Around the World, 28 Pinehurst Crescent, Toronto, ON M9A 3A5 (www.scaw.org), would be appreciated.

Mr. Roland was my favorite teacher at DMCI. His shop classes (I took them all the way through grade 13) helped me throughout my life. He was patient with us, made sure safety was in our heads and taught us skills we would never have known. I world abroad for many years in the machinery business and often thought of Mr. Roland. Today I'm saddened because I've been back for 20 years and never figured out how to say thanks. In fact I forgot his first name (he was Mr. Roland not Bob to me) and could not find him on the internet. To his family and friends, my deepest condolences for your great loss. He was very respected by many of his students.

Mike, Julie, Sarah, Sue and Hugh, you are all in my thoughts and prayers. I know this has been a rough year for you. You have been my second family and I will miss both your mom and dad. I have so many memories of your dad and they all centre around family and school events. I got a double kiss and a huge hug from your dad at your mom's funeral and I think now that is the only time he hugged and kissed me in all those years that I knew him. I will treasure that moment forever.

Mike, Julie, Sara, Susan, Hugh & families

No family should have to go thru what your family has had to endure these last few months. We truly enjoyed our visit in March & will especially remember Bob's stories of you guys growing up and the antenna he built that was able to get such great reception. Please know you are all in our thoughts these days.

Dear Mike, Julie, Sarah, Susan, Hugh and families,
I knew your dad as a teacher at Don Mills Junior High and as Juli and Dave's Uncle Bob. He was a kind, generous person always ready to support and help others. The legacy that your mom and dad have left is evident in each of you.
Best Wishes.

To the entire Rowland family, our sincerest condolences to you all on the loss of your Dad. "Mr. Rowland" was my MCI shop teacher and a wonderful human being. I can still hear his laugh! I was also sad to hear of the passing our your mom earlier this year. On behalf of Patti (Brown), son Trevor, daughter Sara, our deepest of sympathies. Your dad is reunited with his wife in that "better place".

Dear Susan, Ian," the girls" and family,

I will remember with great fondness the wonderful times our class had listening to your Dad teach us about electricity and where to place outlets, walls, and design a kitchen for our Kim's Kitchen project at KP. I used his notes for many years and smiled with the memories. Thank you for sharing both of your parents/grandparents with me. You are all remarkable people who have left a wonderful spot in my heart.
Namaste,

Please accept our deepest sympathy. Your Dad was a fantastic, well-loved man and would do anything to help people in need. We loved him dearly and very much missed each other once we moved from Napanee and then in turn your parents moved back to Toronto. We will never forget either one of them.
Love to all of you and please keep in touch.

My most heart felt condolences to the family for the loss of such a wonderful man. My thoughts are with all of you and I am grateful you all have each other to lean on. Bob"ll, I am going to miss you big guy, your warm smile and big heart. I will always remember you with your good ol' tool belt filled with tools ready to take on another project., You kept picking up new tools you would end up with double or triple because you forgot you already had that one. LOL. You had such a great energy that everyone felt, enjoyed and loved. You always welcomed everyone with open arms. I feel fortunate to have had the opportunity to know you and will miss you greatly. God Bless !

Dear Julie, Sara, and Susan, who met me while visiting my Mother at Providence Healthcare. Ethel passed away June 21st and I did receive a memorial card from Susan, and it did take me a while to connect. I am deeply saddened to read about your Father - what a terrible year for you all. I guess our only way to look at this - is like I'm trying to do and that is to know they are together and free from pain. You three girls deserve a great peace knowing you have done everything possible. I hope our paths cross again under much happier circumstances. Sincerely, Monica Kastelic (nee Hulme) and family.
