William Sager Obituary

WILLIAM EDWARD (BILL) SAGER Bill passed away peacefully with his family at his side at the Toronto General Hospital, succumbing to liver failure after a short illness on Wednesday, February 24, 2010 in his 83rd year. Predeceased by his first wife Margaret (nee Teskey), Bill will be sadly missed by his best friend and loving wife Wilma (previously Gowland), his adored children Gordon (Mary) and Evelyn Marie (David Roberts) and by his grandchildren Heather, George and Jennifer Sager. He treasured his relationship with Wilma's children, Debbie Hynes and Jeff Gowland (Claire) and her grandchildren Leigh Sabourin (Troy) and Dana Gowland. He was a favourite to great-grandson Tristan Sabourin and will be fondly remembered by his brother Dr. Bob Sager and sisters, Marilyn Cairns (Don) and Marcia Horsfall (Bill) and nieces Carrie Anderson (Russell), Angie Horsfall, Andrea Moyer (Matt) and nephew Brian Cairns. A man of many interests and talents, Bill was first and foremost a Teacher. Retiring as a Professor Emeritus in 1987, Bill treasured his years as a Geography Professor at the Faculty of Education, University of Toronto. Only following retirement did he pursue his first love, watercolour painting. He became a valued member of the Toronto Watercolour Society and his many friends treasure his paintings copied to their yearly Christmas cards. Bill also taught courses for the Canadian Power Squadron and Canadian Coast Guard Auxiliary and the friendships he made within these groups were very important to him. He deeply valued friends he made and new experiences which resulted from his membership in the Mimico Cruising Club, where he shouldered many responsibilities and had an opportunity to enjoy his beloved wooden sailboat, Njordr, as a racer and recreationally. Through the years, he expanded his interests in the history of the World Wars, rewriting his father's memoirs from WWI and going to France to trace the steps his father Elmer took as a young Machine Gunner on the outskirts of Arras. He was a longtime member of Humber Valley United Church and valued his associations there. Bill set high standards for himself and everyone else. His sense of humour, open-armed friendship, innate sense of fairness and loving exuberance will live on in the hearts of his family and friends. Friends may call at the Turner & Porter Yorke Chapel, 2357 Bloor St. W., Toronto, at Windermere, east of the Jane subway, from 7-9 p.m. on Thursday, March 4th. Funeral Service will be held at Humber Valley United Church, 76 Anglesey Blvd., Toronto on Friday, March 5, 2010 at 2 p.m. Private interment Park Lawn Cemetery. For those who wish, donations to the University Health Network or the Canadian Liver Foundation would be appreciated.

My condolences to you, the family & loved ones of Bill Sager; Bill, affectionately called Wild Bill by those of us who were taught geography by him at Humberside Collegiate in the late 1950s, was an important person in my early life. With Bill`s teaching, geography became my favourite subject, and Bill was no doubt responsible for me being awarded the Geography Prize in 1960; he also started a Geology Club which,in my case, furthered my interest in Mineralogy & eventually led to a PhD in Geology & Palaeontology, and a 38 year career at the ROM & UT. I will always be grateful to Bill, and remember him very fondly, eccentricities and all.

Bill was a teachers' teacher and founder of North America's first geography-education department. His sage counsel was indispensable for both my personal and professorial development.

I extend my heartfel condolences to you Evelyn, Dave and your whole family in this time of loss and grief. Even though I haven't seen Bill in many years, since our "play dates" Evelyn, back in grade school, I am saddened to hear of his passing. I can see he was an amazing and accomplished man and was certainly blessed to have you, Evelyn and Gord as his children. All the best to you in the days ahead. Big hugs.

My sincere sympathy to all of Bill's family and friends. He will be greatly missed.

It was my great privilege to count Bill as one of my mentors during my time at the Faculty of Education both as an undergraduate (1976) and later during my MA(T) program (1983). He never failed to inspire me when I most needed it most or make a quirky remark that got me thinking in a new (and more productive) direction. He was unfailingly generous and giving of his time and talent; I have spent (and am still spending) my teaching career trying to give back as I learned so much about mentoring others from Bill and his colleagues in the Geography department. Their patience and generosity is something I continue to honour and respect by "paying it forward".

I was so grateful to have had the opportunity several years ago to re-connect with Bill and to be able to tell him personally what an impact he had made on my teaching career and how the many lessons learned at FEUT live on through the activities at the TDSB's Toronto Urban Studies Centre, where I am the site supervisor and teacher.

I deeply regret that I will not be able to attend Bill's service as I will be doing a workshop for my colleagues at the TDSB's other Outdoor Education Centres -- although, somehow, I think that would please Bill.

My thoughts and prayers will be with you.
