WINIFRED ROBERTS Obituary
ROBERTS, WINIFRED (nee GRAHAM) Peacefully, in her 94th year in the Thompson House long-term care home, on August 2, 2022. The devoted mother and grandmother leaves behind her brother, David (Peggy); mother to two sons, James (Denise) and Paul (Carolyn); and four grandchildren, Michelle, Andrew, Heather and Eloise. Also survived by her close friend Millie. Predeceased by her sister, Vivien (Dennis). Born April 8, 1928 in Belfast, Ireland to Floranna and Herbert Graham, she attended Nursing school and went to work at Belfast City Hospital, working as a midwife travelling to local homes to deliver babies. Later she moved to England and nursed at North Middlesex University Hospital, during this time meeting her husband, James Roberts, who had been discharged from the army at the end of WWII. While working in the UK, Winnie was recruited with a number of other nurses to move to Canada and work in St. Catharines, Ontario, James Roberts followed her and they were later married in St. Catharines in 1955, before moving to Toronto. This is when Winnie went to work at Toronto East General Hospital (later renamed Michael Garron) and spent almost 4 decades there, retiring from her Head Nurse position on the short stay unit, while maintaining many of the friendships that had endured during her time there. Since retiring, Winnie took a number of trips across Canada to visit her brother, David; and over the Atlantic to visit her sister, Vivien's family in Northern Ireland; and her brother-in-law, Harry's family in Wiltshire, UK. Winnie loved traveling and the rest of us cherished the trips we were able to take with her. Over the years, she travelled throughout Europe, Mexico, the Caribbean, North America and Morocco. Winnie loved being around cats and dogs and also enjoyed visits to the Donkey Sanctuary. A Memorial Service will be scheduled in the near future, at a time and date yet to be determined.
