Abram Hoffer Obituary

HOFFER, Abram Died in Victoria on May 27, 2009 after a brief illness. Born November 11, 1917 on a farm in Hoffer, Saskatchewan, Abram Hoffer attended a one-room schoolhouse and studied on horseback, eventually graduating from the University of Saskatchewan (BSA, MSA), the University of Minnesota (PhD) and the University of Toronto (MD). He specialized in psychiatry and was, for many years, director of psychiatric research for the Saskatchewan Department of Public Health and associate professor of medicine at the University of Saskatchewan, Saskatoon. In these capacities he carried out groundbreaking research in several areas, ultimately authoring more than 500 peerreviewed and popular articles and more than 30 academic monographs and popular books. He challenged the then-dominant view of schizophrenia as a psychological disorder caused by poor mothering, and contributed importantly to the formation of the field of neuropsychopharmacology. He co-authored research on the genetics of schizophrenia with the renowned geneticist, Ernst Mayer. He co-discovered the first effective lipid-lowering agent, the B vitamin niacin. He developed a controversial treatment for acute schizophrenia based on the principles of respect, shelter, sound nutrition, appropriate medication and the administration of large doses of certain water-soluble vitamins, in the process carrying out among the first controlled clinical trials in psychiatry. He advanced a plausible biochemical hypothesis to explain the cause of schizophrenia and how niacin and vitamin C could eliminate its symptoms and prevent relapses. Intrigued by the concept of metabolic models of madness," he and his research colleagues, notably his close collaborator Humphry Osmond, studied the properties of the hallucinogens and pioneered the use of LSD, which in conjunction with skilled compassionate psychotherapy, was found to be an effective treatment for alcoholism. His work with alcoholism led to a close friendship with Bill W., the founder of Alcoholics Anonymous. He organized a self-help organization for people with schizophrenia, Schizophrenics Anonymous. Participants at SA meetings occasionally exchanged the friendly greeting, Salutations and hallucinations!" His colleague and friend, the American chemist Linus Pauling, championed the biochemical model for treating schizophrenia that was developed in Saskatchewan and provided a conceptual underpinning for the notion that large doses of certain naturally occurring substances can favorably alter disordered brain biochemistry, coining the term orthomolecular psychiatry." Abram Hoffer moved to Victoria in 1976 where he practiced psychiatry for many years, becoming a founding member and president of the Senior Physicians Association of British Columbia. Sometimes criticized from afar for his controversial views, he was beloved by his many patients and close colleagues. He devoted his life to the goal of curing not palliating schizophrenia. His son Bill died in 1998 and his wife Rose died in 2001. He is survived by his daughter, Miriam (and her husband Guy Ewing), by his son John (and his wife Yehudit Silverman), and by four grandchildren: Adam, Megan, Joshua and Rebecca. At his request, the funeral will be private. We are immensely grateful to the nurses and physicians on West 2 of the Royal Jubilee Hospital. We are indebted to Dr. James Spence for his thoughtful and compassionate attention. Donations can be sent to the International Schizophrenia Foundation, founded by Abram Hoffer. 543291

I was desperate to find help for my son, who had been suffering from schizophrenia for several years. No conventional treatment was having any beneficial effect. I came upon Dr. Hoffer's book on the treatment and understanding of the cause of schizoprenia. I then devoured as many books by him as I could find. I took my son to Victoria to have Dr. Hoffer prescribe a treatment plan. I thank God for having found, followed and believed in his understanding of this brain disease. With my son's co-operation and willingness to try this new plan, he began to recover his life. Returning to University, getting a degree in Math/Biology, getting married and have a life that without the proper treatment, he would never have enjoyed. Thank you Dr. Hoffer!! There are no words to express my gratitude and I will continue to spread word of your work for as long as I live.

I have been a loyal follower of Dr. Hoffer for many years. I have diligently studied and read every article, watch his videos and realized many years ago how gifted a medical professional that he was. I have read, Niacin, The Real Story co-written by he, Dr. Foster and Dr. Andrew Saul which is simply brilliant ! Dr. Hoffer was a wonderful man and gifted medical professional! I will spend the rest of my life promoting this book and the magic found between the front and back covers of his wonderful and enlightening book! He was the Guru of Niacin usage and further a man whose determination and integrity but more so his contributions to the Orthomolecular global following was and is priceless. A true genius and a man certainly one who will eventually receive a posthumous Nobel Peace Prize for his work and discovery of NAD ! Rest In Peace, Abram, you are not and will never be forgotten by those who know your struggles to expose the truth about how to save lives and doing it through the use of high dose supplementation !

I am so sorry to hear of Dr. Hoffer's passing. I had a nervous breakdown 20 years ago. I suffered terribly with mainstream medicine for 8 years. Then I became schizophrenic and my life was surely dire.

I stumbled upon Dr. Hoffer's books in the library and treated myself to a full recovery and have been happy and well ever since.

Dr. Hoffer saved my life and gave me life. No one else was able to do that. I am so sorry to hear of his passing.

Ten physician MD,s met in Victoria this weekend to remember Abram. He was the one who had originally encouraged many of us to persue an interest in Alternative and Complementary medicine, and had fully supported us through the years as a friend and mentor. Although he was not recognised by the medical establishment, his concepts of orthomolecular medicine were practiced by thousands of practitioners across the world. Naturopathic Physicians have been practicing his teachings in large numbers in the last few years, without perhaps knowing that Abram was the pioneer of vitamin therapies. The Boucher Institute teaching Naturopathic physicians holds him in great respect, and was sorry that his health did not allow him to travel and teach us in the last few years. He will be remembered prominently in the history of medicine in the future. We miss him on this stage.

I've known Dr. Hoffer since I first met him when I was 17 in 1978. On and off over the years he helped me with vitamins and other medications. He also inspired me to have faith in myself and be productive, which I've worked hard at. I just hope more physicians will take Dr. Hoffer's torch and continue to help those of us in society that so desperately need such wise council. My heart goes out to his family and many thanks to Francis for all her support as well. Shalom.

Dr. Abram Hoffer was a great scientist and a truly compassionate fellow. Always kind, considerate, and generous with his time, he will be fondly remembered by all of his colleagues, friends, family, and patients. He always spoke admiringly of his friend, Linus Pauling, who treasured Dr. Hoffer's work on schizophrenia and high-dose niacin. I will miss him greatly.

Dr. Hoffer took good care of me for over 16 years. He always held out hope for me that I could fulfill my potential. Dr. Hoffer was so kind and generous that he testifed on my behalf, FREE OF CHARGE, at a Law Society of British Columbia "fitness" hearing in May 1994. Thank you, Dr. Hoffer!

I am saddened at the loss of such an amazing person. We met two years ago when my daughter was terribly ill. She is well now and this is entirely due to his medical advice and Orthomolecular Medicine treatment plan. His contributions in Psychiatry and Medicine paved the way towards recovery for many folks the conventional systems had given up on. My daughter and I feel fortunate to have had the opportunity to learn from Dr. Hoffer.

Abram Hoffer saved my life - but he was not my doctor. After decades living with a bipolar II mood disorder, misdiagnosed and mistreated, I deteriorated year after year until I was sick and suicidal. Another depressed person suggested the Jnl of Orthomolecular Medicine and the Intnl Schizophrenia Foundation - 2 miles from my home-office. Steven Carter, exec director, introduced me to books about orthomolecular medicine and I soon recovered - by reading books and following the suggestions of orthomolecular health professionals. Even though I was just a nobody from nowhere and not his patient, Abram Hoffer showed me respect, approval, interest, support and encouragement - he encouraged me to volunteer, to participate in orthomolecular conferences and other meetings and to share my progress and introduce other patients to restorative orthomolecular medicine and speak and write about it and tell other people how they too could benefit from differential diagnosis and restorative treatments. Please consider joining Abram's marathon to H.O.P.E. Help Orthomolecular Public Education - 15 suggestions for anyone willing to participate in an Orthomolecular Support Network, at www.searpubl.ca See also reviews of several of Abram's wonderful books - filled with information, help and hope all clearly explained - including Adventures in Psychiatry: The Scientific Memoirs of Dr. Abram Hoffer.
Thank you, Abram Hoffer for saving my life and for helping thousands of other patients to recover and live well. Thanks to Abram Hoffer, a worldwide network of recovered patients, family members, caregivers and health professionals knows that complementary orthomolecular medicine can heal and help to restore health. We will never forget that Abram Hoffer co-founded restorative orthomolecular medicine and dedicated his life to researching and developing restorative treatments, caring for patients, writing, networking and educating the public - for more than 50 years! Condolences to Abram's family and orthomolecular friends.

I just heard. I've been thinking of Dr. Hoffer the past few days and wondering if he was okay. I'm grateful to have met him and learned from him for several years. He loved to teach his patients how to work with diet and niacin and other nutritional supplements.

I visited with him and Frances Fuller once last year and gained a great deal of reassurance to know that I'm on the right path with the diet I have chosen.

Blessings of comfort to his family.

I met Dr. Hoffer and CEO Frances Fuller over a year ago. My health was going down the stream when I was given upsetting news in 2006 that I was diagnosed with cancer. I went to visit Dr. Hoffer and Frances when I couldn't walk and needed help, it was then that he informed me that he wished he met me sooner. After a few months went by and doing what I was told, I was able to walk again and enjoy my life. I recently went to visit the office for a 2nd time and was so happy to show the improvement that I have made. I'm still fighting this battle and will continue to be strong, as that was a promise that I made to Dr. Hoffer.

Thanks to Dr. Hoffer and Frances I've made myself more stronger and know that I can overcome this disease. I was blessed to find someone so amazing and full of knowledge to help me. I will always have Dr. Hoffer in my heart and know that every day that I have added to my life is thanks to this amazing man.

Dr. Hoffer I was blessed to have met you. You're my angel.

I'm so pleased that Dr. Hoffer has passed on what he has learned to others.
My sincere condolences are to his family and co-workers.
Dr. Hoffer you will never be forgotten.

Dr. Abram Hoffer, Stand Tall,

I’d heard about the impressive Dr. Hoffer with his reputation and willingness to stand against all odds and opposition by colouring outside the lines. He was dedicated to the welfare and vibrant health of humankind and joyfully worked to the end of his life. What a gift this man was, his work and legacy live on.

Last year my get up and go got up and went. So I asked the universe for a shift… and soon learned - be very careful what you ask for. My health plunged me into an abyss of dread and fear. But soon after receiving negative news I gave a letter to Dr. Hoffer during a Food Matters presentation and he emailed me at 5:30 am the following morning. I later met with Dr. Hoffer who at age 91, was sharp as a tack and only concerned about weakness in his legs. He was insightful, witty and wise. After leaving his Orthomolecular Vitamin Information Centre, he and his CEO Frances Fuller, continued to dialogue through email and phone calls with no added surcharges. In a world of ‘cash registers’, Abram Hoffer once again forged his own path of healing though relationship.

After following his program of large dose vitamins and supplements coupled with whole foods diet, my health improved dramatically. Thanks to him I stepped from fear to faith. I am presently lightweight and filled with energy and vibrant health. I had planned to see him next month to show him the visible changes his program has brought about

Dr. Hoffer expressed that he’d hoped to live long enough to have the medical community applaud his work but the special forerunners dare to tread where few are willing to go. That will change. We once giggled about acupuncture in spite of 2000 years of evidence.

But there is another shift occurring as individuals take more response-ability for wellness. Dr. Hoffer’s work nourishes that endeavour.

It pays to think outside of the box and from my vantage point Dr. Hoffer as a very tall man and I was humbled by his persistent efforts toward wellness. Thank God he has left many teachings for us to integrate.

Perhaps we come-to-pass gifts we were given. Perhaps we are born to find our note and play it for the world. I believe Dr. Hoffer deserves a standing ovation for his accomplishments - he was an accomplishment. I am eternally grateful to this Giant of a Man.

God Bless his loving family, friends and colleagues and the thousands who have come alive thanks to his work.

Work is love made visible. And if you can't work with love but only with distaste, it is better that you should leave your work and sit at the gate of the temple and take alms of the people who work with joy.

My sincere sympathy to you all in this time of loss. I was a prostate cancer victim in 1995 and I asked Dr. Hoffer for his advice and suggestions on naturopathic methods of combating the disease. His vitamin regime was a huge benefit and a major factor in avoiding surgery, living a normal busy lifestyle, and still having no more problems, 13 years later. He was, and always will be, a personal hero and fondly remembered.
