Albert Farley Obituary
FARLEY, Dr. Albert (Bert) Leonard Bert died peacefully at Richmond Hospital, at eighty-seven years old, on November first at 7:30 PM after a sudden illness. He had a rich and well spent life. In the forties, after attending Royal Roads in Victoria, he became a navigating officer on a Corvette and spent the war years in the North Atlantic between Halifax and Europe, escorting convoys. He married Iris Dickson during this time. Upon returning to Canada at war's end, he continued his education at UBC, ultimately earning his PhD in cartography at the University of Wisconsin. The fifties were spent at the parliament buildings in Victoria, where he was employed by the government as a geographer and collaborated to write the first BC Resources Atlas. In the sixties he earned a professorship at UBC where he lectured and researched for twenty years. Just before his retirement, he wrote the new BC Resources Atlas, still in use today. His first wife, Iris, died of cancer soon after he retired and a few years later, he met and married Sylvia Munro. Together, they had a chance to travel the world. Africa, South America, Europe, Mexico, Australia, and Japan were just some of their destinations. He loved music and dancing and he and his beloved Sylvia cut fine figures on the dance floor of many a cruise ship. Bert was loved and admired by all who knew him. He was a gentle, patient and caring man, one who made the world a better place. His wife Sylvia dearly misses him. He is survived and will always be loved by his daughters Barbara (husband Ed) and Wendy (husband John) and his grandchildren, Tula, Hunter, Peter, John, Ryan, and Breanna. A. celebration of his life will be held at Richmond Funeral Home on 8420 Cambie Road, on Saturday, November 10th at 12:00. 422972
