Alexander Longmore Obituary

LONGMORE, Alexander John (Jake) Alexander John (Jake) Longmore beloved husband of Eva Longmore of Calgary, passed away on Wednesday, January 21, 2015 at the age of 89 years. Jake was born in Kamloops, BC to Alex and Williamina Longmore. At age 19, he joined the Air Force, later transferring to the Navy at Canadian Forces Base Cornwallis, where he trained and served. When he returned to BC he chose to go into the field of Education. Jake started his career as a teacher, went into administration and then served as school superintendent in four different locations in both BC and AB. He was hardworking, determined, innovative - a visionary. Jake liked the outdoors, sports, driving, travelling, a good laugh, walking and whistling. He was a firm believer in giving back to the various communities in which his family lived. He is survived by his wife Eva; children Geordie, Mairi Anne, Malcolm and Shaun; and four grandchildren Ashley, Jaimee, Tyler, and Taylor. He was predeceased by his parents and sister Mary. There will be a private family celebration. Friends are invited to a public reception which will be held on Saturday, January 31, 2015 from 3:00 to 4:30 pm at Wentworth Manor (Bristol Room), 5717 - 14 Avenue SW, Calgary. Condolences maybe forwarded to www.calgarycrematorium.com If so desired, memorial tributes may be made directly to Discovery House (Calgary) or Boys and Girl's Club (Calgary) in Jake's name. The family would like to thank all of the caregivers for their care, compassion, levels of support and kind words given throughout this time.

I am so sorry to learn of Jake's passing. He was a very decent man and a great superintendent. It was a pleasure to work for him during my time in Victoria.

Dear Eva,
So very sorry to hear about the loss of Jake. What a great guy he was! And thank you for putting the notice in the Victoria Times Colonist. It prompted a long discussion between Susan and me. We shared some decidedly colourful reminiscences!

Being superintendent of a school district means you have to be a gymnast, balancing a high standard of education with reasonable costs. That is always difficult. Jake proved to be an accomplished athlete. The contests we had around the board table were demanding and invigorating, and I learned so much! Wish you could join us for a natter. You were such a great pair!
Kindest regards,
Janet Baird

When I arrived in Oliver, BC in 1947, Jake was my first teacher. He was very young and enthusiastic. He was a dedicated teacher and certainly served the BC and Alberta teaching systems with distinction.
My deep sorrow to Eva and the family for the loss of a great man.

Eva, This will take you back to Oliver days! John sent me Jake's obituary, as he lives in Calgary and hopes to attend your reception on the weekend. What a fabulous man Jake was. You, his greatest love and supporter, have my deepest sympathy for his loss.
I immediately flipped back in my memory to having you for a swim at Grannie & Grampie Tait's pool when you brought an Australian, Tony Madigan, (a boxer, I think) to visit Oliver after the (then called) British Empire Games, in Vancouver! . I also think of you often when driving on Henderson, towards our home in Gordon Head, seeing your house there. My first memories, though, are of you singing in the Oliver Choral Society with my parents, Alex & Stanley Bertram, directed by Harold Ball! You had a fabulous voice.
Jake has every reason to Rest in Peace. I hope you are healthy and that you can continue to enjoy your lovely family for many more years. Love, Diana (Bertram) Denny. [email protected]
