Alexander McCabe Obituary

McCABE, Alexander Kenneth
We are sad to announce that Alex passed away on January 6th, 2026. Alex, or Axe as he was often referred to with great affection, was born in Victoria to Alex and Ena McCabe on June 4th, 1931. Predeceased by sister Maureen, brother-in-law Stuart MacLeod, and old friends Ken MacKay and Peter Butler. Alex is survived and lovingly remembered by cousins Karen Chapman and Julie Hall, by other family members, and by his oldest and best friend Ross Noel.

Alex attended Willows School, Oak Bay High, Victoria College, and U.B.C., graduating with a Bachelor of Commerce in 1954. After graduation, he articled with Ismay, Boiston & Dunn and in 1958 obtained his Chartered Accountant's certificate. After six years with the Greater Victoria School Board and a stint with B.C.'s Ministry of Finance, Alex joined the firm of Green, Horwood, Munro & Tuckey. He soon became a partner, serving the citizens of Victoria for twenty-six years until his retirement.

In his youth, Alex played trombone in the Victoria Bays Band from 1944 to 1950. He bowled and curled and like many athletes of that era, played a variety of sports, concentrating mainly on soccer where his skills carried him up to the Victoria and District Soccer League. When not on a soccer pitch, Alex could be found at the Uplands Golf Club, honing a deadly short game later used to consistently pick the pockets of any overconfident opponents. In 1957, he joined the Victoria Golf Club where he remained an active member until his death. As life moved forward, Alex toured the world with his golf buddies, playing socially and in pro-am tournaments in Scotland, Ireland, Mexico, the Bahamas, Dominican Republic, Canada, and the United States. He accomplished the elusive trifecta of golf: seven holes in one, breaking par, and shooting his age. Throughout his life, he won various Club, pro-am, and charity events including the over 80 division in the Seniors North-West Golf Association Annual tournament.

In his later years, the Axe man got his greatest enjoyment playing twice a week in a group called the 'Daft Buggers'. To this day, the players refer to these four-on-four matches as the 'Axe game'. He was a legend at the Victoria Golf Club. He was loved and respected by all. He will be greatly missed.

At his request, there will be no funeral service. A celebration of life for family and friends will be held at the Victoria Golf Club from 3:30 to 6:00 PM on Thursday, January 29th, 2026.
