Alexia BAINAS Obituary

The family of Lexi Bainas is heartbroken to share that Lexi passed away unexpectedly on November 9, 2025, at age 77 in Duncan, BC.

Alexia Margaret Bainas was born in Victoria, BC, in 1948 at the Royal Jubilee Hospital to Mervin Alexander Bainas and Margaret Lucy Bainas and is predeceased by her husband, Nils Olson, of Lake Cowichan. She is survived by her siblings Joe, Bob and Kathy Bainas.

Lexi attended the University of Victoria and worked as a personal support worker, with plans to become a teacher. Her life changed when she met Nils Olson and moved to Lake Cowichan in 1971.

Lexi loved life in Lake Cowichan and became a valued photojournalist for its newspaper, "The Lake News," and, later, the "Cowichan Valley Citizen," retiring in 2020. Lexi's friendly curiosity was perfectly suited to seeking out local people and their stories.

Music and singing were some of Lexi's joys. She was a member of several choirs, including with the churches of St. Matthias and St. John the Divine in Victoria. Lexi also enjoyed travel, making trips to Sweden, Hawaii, Alaska and beyond.

The family kindly requests that any charitable donations be made to the Kaatza Historical Society, where Lexi served on the Board of Directors, in lieu of a service or flowers.

We cherish the memories of Lexi's life and the impact she made on all who knew her.
