Allen Olson Obituary

"I learned to like people I didn't like. There is something good about that."

Left to celebrate Allen's life are his wife of 53 years Sharon, son Nathan (Melissa-Connor, Mackenzie), daughters Jill (Phill-Charlie, Violet and baby due in July), Leanne (Ryan-Addison) and associate daughter Kate. Brother Wes (Elaine), sister-in-law Muriel, and brother-in-law Jack (Sharon). Gone before, are his mother May, father Carl, sister June (Ed), brothers Richard (Joan) and Ron (Marlene), brother-in-law Ken and nephew Brent. Allen has 16 nieces and nephews across Canada- Carrie, Gill, Doug, Janet, David, Robin, Kim, Michael, Tara, Patti, Shelly, Nancy, Bobbi, Donnie, Brad and Blair. All of whom touched his life in their own unique way.

Allen spent most of his career as a child care worker- a job he approached with pride, humour and enthusiasm. The Olson family also ran a martial arts, boxing and fitness business for 35 years in the West Shore. Allen and Sharon have resided happily in Metchosin for 46 years in a house Allen proudly built for his family.

By the time he developed pancreatic cancer Allen felt he had used up his 9 lives by living his life to the fullest. The Olson family would like to thank Dr. Pereira, Dr. Geller and Dr. Trouton as well as the staff at the BC Cancer Clinic for their kindness. To all the friends and workmates who crossed Allen's path, thank you. Allen wishes to send a special appreciation to his brother Wes, Jack Jones and Captain Dave, for the many laughs, "thanks for keeping me over the top all these years."

A celebration of Allen's life will be held on Sunday April 29th, 1-3pm at the Olympic View Golf Course.

Allen has requested that donations be made "to whatever makes you happy." Thank you to C.A.R.E. Funeral Services 250-642-2444.

Sensei Allen, I've only just found out about your passing. You and Nate were huge influences on me when I was young. The guidance you showed and the discipline you ingrained in me has stuck with me throughout my life. I regret not being able to see you before you passed but you have always been in my thoughts. You will be sorely missed.

Allen was an exceptional clinician. He combined his excellent insight with his ability to connect directly and authentically with clients; and this was further empowered by his experience as a martial arts leader.
During my 20 year tenure (in this Province) I have experienced a variety of excellent ongoing clinical services. I thought that the Day Hospital Program, and especially the combined work of Alan Olson and Julie Forster, was probably (pound for pound and dollar for dollar) the most effective clinical program I have seen.

Sending Special Healing Thoughts to Sharon and all those who loved and were loved by Allen.
Al came into my life in the early 1970's, and we then had many subsequent years of working together.
What stands out for me is his very big love for and pride in his family, and his big love for life.
He had an amazing gift for reaching and improving the self esteem of so very many troubled children and youth!
Yes, he will truly be missed by so many.

My heartfelt condolences to you Sharon, Nathan, Jill, Leanne and your families.
Al, you leave us all better for living, playing, and working with you. Families and children of all ages could count on you listening to them and working with them to solve issues they faced (at Ledger and with your family teaching karate on the Westshore). You were innovative, fun, and a wonderful colleague.

Al was a maverick in our CYC field and helped many youth and their families over the years first with the 6th floor EMP program and then at QA Ledger. And he was always ready to share a laugh or create a teaching moment. He made an impact and was a natural leader.

Al was like a father figure to me. He had a way of making you feel good about yourself and a mannerism that set your mind at ease that no matter what might be troubling you, everything was going to be just fine. He welcomed me to his gym from the time I first set foot in there, but it also felt like he was welcoming me to his family. The world is poorer for his passing, but heaven must be ecstatic that he is there. Best wishes and sincerest condolences to Sharon, Nate, Jill and Leanne and your respective families. See you again one day, Al. Golf a round or two with my dad in the meantime.

I'll always remember the weekend I spent on the island at your home with my dad and Muriel, and had the chance to meet and spend time with Allen. I'm not sure I've ever laughed so much! What a beautiful legacy of love and laughter he left behind, that will never be forgotten. xoxo
