Allison Weir Obituary

WEIR, Allison Grace (Telford)
January 8, 1952 - December 11, 2024

Allison Weir died December 11th after a 6 year battle against lung cancer.
Her 72 years of life were filled with kindness by always reaching out to help others with warmth and love.
Born in Vancouver to Eva Grace (Fuller) and Dr. Ken Telford, with brothers Malcolm (predeceased) and Gordon. She attended Crofton House School, making lifelong friends. In 1970, she attended Neuchatel Junior College in Switzerland then returned to Vancouver to enter Vancouver General Hospital nursing program in 1972. Upon graduation in 1974, she started work in the VGH emergency room.
In 1984 Allison relocated to Victoria where she married Dr. Rene Weir - they raised a loving family of four: Lindsay (Keyvan Shojania), David (Lisa), Andrew (Lawrence) and Elizabeth and was a loving grandmother to Chloe and Nola in Toronto.
Allison was head nurse at St. Michael's University School for 19 years where she administered medical care and social support to hundreds of students, teachers and staff.
She always found time to swim daily at Vancouver Lawn and Tennis Club, then Grand Pacific Athletic Club in Victoria. She was staunch member of her book club and a devoted duplicate bridge player.
Allison had a long association with Victoria Symphony, Canadian Club, and Victoria Art Gallery. When travelling to New York, London, Paris, and Amsterdam, she made art galleries and museums her favourite venues.
Allison was a consummate chef, and always loved to bake. She was an avid gardener both at home and at the Shawnigan Lake cottage where she loved to entertain.
She read extensively with the desire to engage people, always interested in their ideas plus personal stories.
Allison constantly tried to help people with their problems by contacting her extensive network of friends with her overwhelming concern for others always visible. She was truly an "angel" to those in need.
She was a mentor to many and always empathetic - her usual closing phrase was "You can do it." She always downplayed her problems by first stating "Let's talk about you and your family."
We are forever grateful to the tremendous medical support she received from so many -Dr. Steve Gordon; Dr. David Saltman and Dr. Georgia Geller and Victoria Cancer Clinic team; Dr. Sen Phang and Dr. Heather Clark and community nursing outreach; Dr. Melissa Collins; Dr. Kevin Forkheim and Royal Jubilee Hospital medical imaging department; Dr. Jean Maskey and Victoria Palliative care team and Cross Cancer Institute in Edmonton - you were constantly there to help in her time of need.
A celebration of life is planned for the new year. Instead of flowers, please give donations to the BC Cancer Foundation.

I first met Allison at her and Rene's wedding. I live in California, and haven't traveled back to BC often. Allison was always so sweet and kind. I remember when CA was in drought conditions, and Allison asked why my young son wasn't flushing the toilet. We had a good laugh about how my children were trained to conserve water, and only flush if it was Brown. She will be greatly missed as a sister and aunt to our family. Condolences to Rene and my nieces and nephews.

Pat and I were shattered to learn of Allison´s illness 6 years ago and now to learn of her death. We´ve had multiple connections with this amazing warm, involved and compassionate person since coming to Victoria with a young family from New Zealand in 1986. Our thoughts are with Rene and family.

I enjoyed knowing Alison through our encounters at the Grand Pacific pool. She was a demon in the fast lane and one would never have known she was ill. She was always a warm, chatty, interesting person, eager to check up on mutual friends and local goings-on. She will be deeply missed. Sincere condolences to her family.

We are so sorry to read of Allison´s death. Her ability to light up a room was unmatched. She brought laughter, care and attention to any gathering, pulled an array of cookies out of the freezer if I dropped by, popped New Yorkers into our mailbox until shortly before she passed -a tiny sample of her gifts. She loved her family deeply. Our sincere condolences.

I knew Allison back in the Vancouver days, late 1970's early '80s. Loved her wit and intelligence, particularly her care for people. She was the consummate mother, seeing after her children with expertise and brimming with love. Though gone too soon, she was one to make sure to live every day to the fullest. So sad to lose someone so dear...

The elegance and charm of our lovely city has diminished with the sad loss of Allison. Always gracious and never an unkind word to say, it was such a delight to meet up with her on a neighbourhood walk or a quick chat as she drove up the driveway. There are some people who lift your spirits no matter what the problems of the day may be, and we were so fortunate to have Allison as a neighbour to do just that. You will be missed.
Our most sincere sympathy to Rene and the children for such an immeasurable loss.

I knew Mrs Weir from going to school with Lindsay. She was always so lovely whenever I saw her at school or at her house. A friendly, kind and generous person and mum. I'm very sorry for your loss.

I was fortunate enough to cross paths with Allison and chat a few times with her as my father and I have both been patients of her husband... Her compassion for others shone through her and her middle name suits her well. She was full of " Grace"
Our thoughts and prayers go out to Rene and family during this difficult..
