Anand Prakash Obituary
PRAKASH, Dr. Anand
September 18, 1932 - November 4, 2015
Dad was born in a Himalayan town of Simla, India and was the only boy of 6 children. Upon earning a Bachelor and Master of Science degrees both in Zoology with a concentration in fisheries he migrated as a young man to Vancouver where he attended the University of British Columbia in 1956. During his 4 years at UBC he earned a Master of Arts in Oceanography and a Ph.D. in Marine Biology.
The Canadian Government was the beneficiary of 28 years of full commitment, passion and research to Marine Biology and Fisheries. As he elevated from researcher to Senior Scientific Advisor, many very interesting experiences were logged including being awarded the Sir John Murray Fellowship of the Royal Society of London while participating on the international Indian Ocean Expedition on board the Royal Research Ship DISCOVERY in 1963. The one he was really proud of was the first circumnavigation of the Americas from Halifax to Halifax in 1970-1971 aboard the HUDSON.
Having a fondness for travel, Dad moved us to Norway in 1971 to 1972 for a sabbatical as he enjoyed being the visiting scientist at the University of Trondheim. We spent a lot of time traveling through Europe and are eternally grateful for this unforgettable experience learning about different cultures and appreciating the gift of travel. It was our Father's great love and this has inspired our whole family to continue this spirit of discovery.
We moved to Ottawa where he occupied various government roles including Chief of Marine Programs, Shellfish Water Quality and consulting work for the UN Development Program and WHO between 1973 and 1988. After retiring in 1988 Dad moved to his favorite place on earth, British Columbia, where he opened Myticulture International Inc. and was the President and CEO from 1991 to 1995. He finally decided to retire again but couldn't' sit still, so, Dad decided to write a cookbook! It is called the "World of Kebabs" published by Whitecap and was based on his many years of travel, photos and recipes of the world's street foods. Our family has been the recipient of his experiments for years and we love them!
Nancy, his loving wife since 1987, Sanjay & Sunil, his two proud sons, Stacey and Marisela, both dear daughters-in-law and his four adoring grandchildren, Maya, Jasmine, Matthew and Jaysan will miss him and live their life in his shadow of love, respect and the pursuit of education and, of course, laughter.
Our family is profoundly grateful to Victoria Hospice for making sure end of life was filled with dignity, care, tenderness and on his terms. We also wish to thank the many caregivers associated with Dad's care over the past years, including Dr. C. Stignant and the entire dialysis clinic team, Dr.A. Della Siega, the ICD clinic team, and Dr. P. Houghton. Without their compassion, patience, and his best interest at heart he would have not enjoyed such great final years.
A memorial service will be held in Victoria, B.C. in June 2016.
