Anthony COX Obituary

Born in Sydney, Australia on May 26, 1936, Tony peacefully passed away surrounded by family in Palliative Care at Royal Jubilee Hospital on January 3, 2023 after a lengthy battle with cancer. He is survived by his beloved wife, Donna, of 18 years, two stepchildren Janet (Ray) Gairdner and Mark (Jody) Pavesic, former wife Barbara, sons Jeffrey (Heather), Lindsay (Caralee). He will be dearly missed by the grandchildren Kodi, Kelsey, Keely, Alisa and Jenelle. Tony is also survived by his sister Julia (Brian) Woolmer and family in Sydney, Australia. Predeceased by his father, Frank, in 1982 and mother, Melva, in 1992.

As his life and adventures began, Tony became a prefect at Sydney's prestigious Grammar School where he became very proficient in cricket and rugby. After graduation, he moved to the Australian Outback and became involved in the cattle industry.

In 1958, as a young man determined to see the world, Tony decided a move to Canada would be his first stop. Once he arrived, he quickly became interested in a future in broadcasting.

It wasn't long before Tony was hired at CFCW in Camrose, Alberta before moving to CFRN-TV in Edmonton. There he won several RTNDA awards, one of which was "Arctic Angel", a resupply mission for scientists near the North Pole. Another for recording the first commercial barrel of oil extracted from the Athabasca Oil Sands.

Next on Tony's agenda was twenty years as News Director of CHEK TV in Victoria, BC where he was elected President of the Radio and Television News Director of Canada.

During his CHEK years, he became Chairman of the Board, Oak Bay Parks and Recreation, a Director at the Garth Home Centre for the Mentally and Physically Challenged, a founding Director of Victoria Crime stoppers, Rotarian of the Year in 1990 with the Victoria Rotary Club and more recently, a member of Langford's Protective Services Committee.

Tony was an avid cricketer with the Castaways CC as a wicket keeper for nearly thirty years until his playing days ended. He loved the game so he continued on as a valued umpire.

As a keen recreational mariner, Tony was familiar with the waters of Puget Sound from Lake Washington as far north as Desolation Sound.

After retiring from broadcasting, Tony pursued various interests for the next twenty years. They included working as an Executive Assistant with the BC Government, a ferry skipper with Victoria Harbour Ferries, a patrol officer with Transport Canada in Victoria Harbour and a security officer at Government House for the Lieutenant Governor of BC, The Honourable Janet Austin.

After retiring, Tony became a keen gardener and was the envy of all of the neighbours.

Cremation has taken place. A private family gathering will happen at a later date. Our sincere thanks to Dr. Maria Dibb, Dr. Andrew Attwell and Dr. Alexander (at the Victoria Cancer Clinic). A special thank you, also, to the nurses and physicians at Royal Jubilee Hospital in Palliative Care.

I have great memories of working with Tony at CFRN-TV when he was involved with the "Arctic Angel" documentary. Another chapter to be remembered about the history of our newsroom.

I first met Tony when we were both employed at CFRN-TV in Edmonton. Later, when I moved to Victoria we met again, at CHEK-TV. Tony was always a "busy man" and worked hard to ensure that his newsroom remained dedicated to gathering and presenting "the facts". I wish him well in the place in which he now rests and hope that his family and friends will remember his radiant smile and boundless energy.

Donna, what an amazing and rich life Tony had. Not only in all his adventures and pursuits, but that he found time to give back so much to his community. I am very humbled and in awe reading this. A bright light, and what a wicked good smile he had!

With joining CHEK in 1975 I was pleased to have the opportunity of meeting Tony. Later as a Manager we developed a good working relationship. Honourable and dedicated to the truth on or off air. Rest In Peace. Bill Bishop

So sad to learn that Tony is gone. Was a acquainted with him for several decades through the broadcast industry and later when he served at Government House. Last summer, I was delighted when I approached him to join the "Medals Team" for the BC 55+ games as an awards announcer for track and field. Sadly he was compelled to withdraw for further treatment. Kind condolences to all those close.

Tony´s bright radiant smile and character remains a happy memory.
We met by chance.
Moored at Port of Sydney (2006?), near Cox´s, Tony walked over to my husband Doug asking if he would have a look at his engine. Following he invited us to come aboard. Laughter and conversation over wine, followed by dinner ashore .
Later a rendezvous at Port of Friday. We hold these great memories near, Donna.
With compassion and empathy,

Tony was a long time colleague of mine at CHEK TV.
I remember him saying "I don´t have to worry about the 1120 news, Bruce has it."
For the most part he left me alone and let me do the news.
He, himself was a good reporter and put his own unique stamp when doing sports.
G´day mate and may the spirit of kindness be with you in the outback and wherever you are.

We (CHEK TV FRATERNITY) called him "Top Cat" . Aways had that huge mischievous smile. He was my mentor in my very early TV days back in 1974. He had such a positive impact on so many of us carving out a career in television. He was a close and loyal friend.

I was saddened to hear of Tony's passing. While he and I did not work together directly, we had a professional friendship through the broadcasting industry and mutual respect for the work we did. My condolences to his family.
