Barbara LANE Obituary

Barbara Poole Lane (nee Rand)

Barbara died while still making plans. She loved planning, although her life rarely went accordingly. Daughter of Jack and Mary Rand, sister to Marjorie, Richard and David, as a child Barbara used to say she would never leave home. Yet through her life, she was fortunate enough to travel the world and extensively throughout Canada. The most common complaint was that she was never home. She tried dropping out of school in Grade 4 but ended up a lifelong learner. Barbara said she would never marry but was very happily married twice, to David Poole until his death in 2000 and since 2010 to Kurt Lane. She planned never to have children but was a loving aunt to her nieces and nephews and stepmother to Carolyn, Greg, Brittany, Ben & Patrick, and enjoyed being a step-grandmother to their 10 children. Barbara never had an actual career plan, but had many rewarding jobs (including Island Health & BC Cancer Agency) and volunteer work (Our Place), though with retirement she said she finally found something at which she excelled. She planned to be a hermit, but leaves many friends wondering what's the plan now?
Funeral service will be held on Tuesday, April 2, at 2 pm at Christ Church Cathedral, 930 Burdett Avenue, Victoria BC.

Barb was always fun to work with .She was witty, and very intelligent and was a crackerjack statistician.A life she shared with everyone and she was always one step ahead. As a surgeon she was so helpful with our data.We will miss her a lot.
Rest in peace

Barbara was one of a kind, and the world will be a sadder place without her. Barb was intelligent, insightful and caring, and saw the world through a prism of humour.
Although she believed she would never marry, instead Barb found not one, but two soulmates. David was bright and mercurial, with a wicked sense of humour. Kurt was very smart, gentle and kind, also sharing her humour. Both adored her.
Wherever Barb went, she brought laughter with her, and uplifted those around her. At the same time, she brought professionalism, integrity and intelligence to her work, enjoying a well respected, successful career.
She was valiant and courageous, never allowing her illnesses to interfere with her love of life. Everyone who knew Barb will miss her deeply.

I will sorely miss this lovely lady who, through her marriage to my son Kurt, came to grace our lives with her class, wit, intelligence and charm. God grant her peace. Love Mom Lane

Kurt, I think she would like the way you have written about her. No big fanfare, just simply, Barbara. In her being who she was, she touched so many people including me and gifted them her love, her compassion, wit and easy humour. Love your sis Laura

Barb was an intelligent, unique and great person who absolutely made everyone´s life around her better just by being her. I will admit to having to research Fawlty Towers, Monty Python and all of Douglas Adams trilogy in five parts to the Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy to understand her work references. And it was always worth it. Thank you very much for all the good memories Barb.

We met Barbara & David on Pender Island when contracted to paint their house interior. This evolved into an addition, garden stairs, laughter, friendship a hilarious garage sale [main source of laughter Barb's mom]. Sorrow at Dave's passing, but happiness meeting & getting to know Kurt. Barb never changed, we loved her to the end, although not seeing each other very much. Thank you for a wonderful memory bank Barb. Our sympathy to all family members. Larry, Mimi, Mike & Nadine Nordby
