Barry CHOW Obituary

Teresa (Terri) Kenward and Kelvin (Kelly) Chow are sad to announce the passing of their brother Barry in December 2022 at his home in Victoria a few months before his 73rd birthday.
Barry is predeceased by his mother May Chow (née Lee) in 2002 and father James (Jimmy) Y. Chow in 2014. He is survived by sister Terri Kenward (Lloyd); niece Kimberly Kenward (Ralph Lange); great-niece Winnifred; niece Tracey Kenward; and brother Kelly Chow (Elizabeth); niece Lindsay Koehn (Ryan); great-niece Libby; great-nephew Preston; nephew Desmond West-Chow (Haley); great-nephew Eugene; and great-nieces Layne and Ada.
Born and raised in Victoria, Barry moved to Ontario to start his professional life and then went to Vancouver to further his education. He returned to his hometown for the remainder of his career and retirement years.
Barry attended Burnside Elementary, S.J. Willis Junior High and Victoria High School. He received his Bachelor of Science (Math and Psychology) from the University of Victoria in 1971. After a few years working with children and adolescents at care centres in Victoria and Ontario, he returned to school for his Master of Science (Audiology and Speech Sciences) from the University of British Columbia in 1976. Barry worked 31 years as a speech and language pathologist for School District #62 in Colwood and Langford until he retired in 2008. It was a career well spent in helping children with life challenges and he took great pride in his work.
An independent and private person, Barry always made time to hang out with his nieces, nephew and their families whenever they visited Victoria. He often came armed with activity supplies, favorite foods and LifeSaver storybooks. He was a loving son who was compassionate in caring for his mother in her final years.
Barry took pleasure in cooking, watching movies and doing jigsaw puzzles with his family, friends and their children. He was an avid fan of the UVic Vikings and an active volunteer in booster club activities. He also enjoyed reading widely, taking particular delight in movie critic reviews and consumer reports. And he could rarely resist a good bargain.
A remembrance event will be held in Victoria in due course. Please contact family for details.

Barry and I worked together for several years in the Glenlake Student Support Services office, School District 62. I am sorry to hear about his passing. He would make surprise visits to my home and I remember one time my big rough collie jumped up on him and scared the heck out of Barry. He was very generous with food gifts to me and my family. He spoke very kindly about his family and friends. You will all miss him. Take care everyone.

I had the privilege of working with Barry in SD 62. I always found Barry to be very well organized and student focussed. He always took the time to keep you up to date with his cases as the need arose.

Barry, was a quiet and humble man until you put a floor hockey stick in his hand. He thoroughly enjoyed student vs. staff games. His athletic prowess shone during those games.

Barry was a great sport and it was a pleasure to know him.

I knew Barry well at VHS.
He and I hung out in the very smelly equipment room off the side of the old Roper Gym.
He was manager of the Totems, the boy's basketball team and I was manager of the Tigers, the girl's basketball team.
Inspite of having to deal with very smelly athletic uniforms we had a lot of fun.
I lost track of him when he went to Uvic and I went into Nursing.
I am sorry to see he has passed away. I am glad he was able to enjoy 17 years of retirement!

My heartfelt condolences to Barry´s family. Barry and I were school mates at S.J. And Vic High. On accession when we met talked about old times and food. As an educator he helped and shaped the lives of his students in a positive way. Rest In Peace my friend

I had the great pleasure of working with Barry at SD62. He was the first person who welcomed me to our department when I was hired and he ensured that I knew the ins and outs of working in the school system as an SLP. He and I enjoyed spirited conversations about all things speech-language related. Barry loved working with his students and took great pride in his work. Barry had a quirky sense of humour and pranked me more than a few times. (But he was on the receiving end too). My heartfelt condolences go out to his family and friends.

I worked with Barry in the Sooke School District .. what a guy!! We had many laughs, he had lots of corny jokes that kept the students entertained and he was an all round great guy. I am sorry for your loss.
