Bart Spruyt Obituary

SPRUYT, Bart Petrus Paulus
1945 - 2024
Unexpectedly passed away early on September 6, 2024. Predeceased by his parents Jacob and Boudina Spruyt, brother Hubert, daughter Shannon, his favourite mother and father-in-law, and Mildred and Boyd. Leaving to lovingly remember him, wife, Pat of 56 years, son Gordon (Sonja), grandkids, Anja, Abigail, RJ, and Madigan, brother, Anton (Sheila), sisters Margo (John), Ann (Robert), Elisabeth, Boudien (Robert), Josephine (Ron), brother-in-law David (Margaret), many nieces and nephews in Canada, and family in The Netherlands.

Born in Haarlem, Netherlands, Bart emigrated to Victoria, BC with his family in 1953. He was a Master Mechanic for over 50 years, with many still coming to him for his knowledge and expertise. His passion from a very early age was cars, and speed. He went on to join VMSC where he took up road racing and built his own cars. He travelled to Westwood, Seattle, Portland, Olympia to race, meeting new friends we still see today. He later joined the Cadillac Club, meeting good friends and going to car shows and activities with the club. He restored a 1974 Toyota Corolla station wagon, which he showed in car shows for years, many times coming home with an award. He looked forward to showing his car along with his son and his matching Corolla station wagon. He loved Hawaii and hoped to return soon. Bart loved early rock and roll, and country music, accumulating a good vinyl collection. Loved his grandkids to bits, and so, so proud of them.

He wished no service. Cremation has taken place. Celebration of life is planned for October 6, 2024, 1 to 3 pm at the Field House, lower field area at Juan de Fuca Rec Centre, Colwood, BC. We will be sporting bright happy colours honoring Bart's love of Hawaii. Donations can be made to the Crohn's and Colitis Foundation or BC Kidney Foundation in Bart"s memory.

My sincere condolences to Pat, Gordy, Sonja and the kids.

I´ll miss hearing Bart outside tinkering, and sometimes loudly clanging, on cars with the oldies playing on the radio.

He slowed down a little the last few years, but still enjoyed getting behind the wheel of the Toyota or his truck and going for a cruise.

He was definitely a protector and I felt reassured having Bart next door. I know all I had to do was phone over and he´d be out the door as quick as can be to sort things out.

Rest in Peace Bart

My deepest sympathies to all family and friends.
I remember speaking with Bart often in the events leading to my best friends death. It gives me great comfort knowing that Shannon now has her dad with her. I remember her being so excited to fix up that corvette with him. She truly enjoyed spending time with him and spoke of him often with love and admiration.

When I first came to Canada, BART it was you and your family who made me welcome and helped me tremendously to fit into a new school, a new language and a new culture.
( you taught me read during recess time)
I still think back to those times with deep gratitude.
Thank You BART

My big brother Bart. Always ready to stick up for his 'little sisters' whether we needed it or not. I can still hear him say my name. Rest easy brother, the race is done and the car is in picture perfect shape.

Dear Pat: I was so sorry to read of Bart's passing in today's paper. You may not remember me but I often heard Ian (who passed away ten years ago) speak very highly of Bart. They were so into cars. I offer my deepest sympathy......Judy Rankin
