Betty Vryheid Obituary

1927 - 2012

Betty passed away at home in Victoria. She was a devoted and much-loved mother and friend and will be missed by all who knew her. Predeceased by her husband Hans and grandson Owen; she is survived by her children Maya (Norris), Julia, Andre and grandson Nathan, her sister Mary, brother Walter, niece Bianca and sister-in-law Puck.

Betty grew up in Holland and on marriage, moved to Africa and in 1953 settled in Canada. She and her family lived in many communities across western Canada until they arrived in Calgary where they stayed for 28 years and made many life-long friends. She taught swimming and spent happy times at the family cabin on Ghost Lake.

Betty and Hans retired to Victoria where she was active in bridge, a book club and enjoyed gardening. In winter, they travelled North America in their camper van and brought home wonderful memories and photos. Her two annual trips - one to Calgary to visit dear friends and the other to Puerto Vallarta - were her favourites.

Her family would like to thank all of her friends and neighbours for their visits, phone calls, cards and flowers she received for the last seven months. Betty was overwhelmed by the thoughtfulness and kindness shown to her.

A very special thank you to Dr McQueen and his staff, as well as the Victoria Hospice palliative care team and Royal Oak community nurses.

Donations of remembrance may be made to the Greater Victoria Palliative Care (Victoria Hospice) or the BC Cancer Foundation.

Friends and neighbours are invited to celebrate Betty's life at her home on Tuesday, February 21, 2012 at 11:00 a.m.
