Brian Whitmore Obituary

WHITMORE, Brian George September 4, 1947 - July 10, 2020 Educator, raconteur, loving family member, and loyal friend, Brian succumbed to cancer in the hospital in which he was born, Victoria's Royal Jubilee Hospital, on Friday, July 10th. Left to mourn his passing are his loving wife, Elaine; his siblings Bob (Bernadette); Lee (Wendy); and Elaine Hebda (Richard); nieces and nephews. Brian completed his education in Victoria, graduating from Victoria High School in 1965 and obtaining his B.A. at the University of Victoria. He began studies in a Master's program in History at UVic, but soon realized it was teaching that interested him more than any other field. After receiving his teaching degree, he taught at Highrock Junior High School for two years. He was then asked to join the teaching staff at Spectrum Community School, where they were exploring new approaches to teaching high school students in the mid 1970s. At Spectrum, he found his niche as a teacher and mentor to students. He loved education and had a special connection with Spectrum and his students there. Many former students have commented that not only did he kindle their interest in the subject he was teaching, but they felt moved to embrace a love of knowledge as exemplified by Brian's own approach to learning. When it was decided to add a theatre to the Spectrum complex, Brian worked closely with the architect to make it into an optimal performance venue. After its completion, Brian was instrumental in developing the Technical Theatre and Media Arts programs, which are now thriving components of the Fine Arts offerings at Spectrum. Following his retirement from Spectrum in 2008, he worked to make a dream of his come to fruition, that of forming the Spectrum Alumni Association. Since its inception, he served as its president until illness recently forced him to step down. In addition to his post-retirement involvement at Spectrum, he became a sessional appointee in the UVic Faculty of Education, teaching students "how to teach", a role he found very rewarding. Brian was passionate about his family; his friends; history; music (gifted with an excellent tenor voice, he knew the words to just about every hit song played from the '60s and '70s); chess; his boat, the Marlaine; and Phutball. The latter, a football pool that expanded to nine members and became primarily a social group, was begun some 40 years ago as a way to compel Brian and his closest friends to keep in touch despite the demands of their separate careers. Witty and kind, encouraging and engaging, intelligent and provocative, Brian was all that and more. He will be very much missed by all who knew him. Brian was interred at a small family event at Ross Bay Cemetery. A Celebration of Life will take place at a later date. In recognition of Brian's commitment to education at Spectrum throughout his life, the Spectrum Alumni Association has graciously created a scholarship in Brian's name - the Brian Whitmore Memorial Scholarship. Donations are gratefully accepted for the scholarship through the Alumni Association website (spectrumalumni.com). Brian would be pleased to know that supporting student education will be carried on in his name. Condolences may be offered at www.sandsvictoria.ca

RIP Brian. You were a very popular Teacher when I went to Spectrum from 77 to 79. You were influentual in getting me to Graduate. If it wasn't for you I would have never Graduated. Thanks a million.

Sad to read of Brian's passing. We are cousins, his mom was my dad's sister. We haven't been in touch since the 1960's but I have often thought of him & wondered about him. I smile when I think of the time we went to the Pines Drive-In theatre in Prince Albert, Saskatchewan with a group of my friends! It was the first time they had met him & my girlfriend immediately fell in teenage love with him! My sincere condolences to his family. May the wonderful memories you have help to ease the grief.

I was very sorry to learn of Brian's passing. A childhood friend and a school classmate all the way from elementary through to high school. Many memories of playing “Cops and Robbers” with our cap pistols, riding our bikes all over the neighbourhood and on Saturdays as far away as the Point Ellice CN rail yard where we ran on top of long lines of empty flatcars and the Outer Wharf lumber yard next to the Breakwater where we played “hide and seek” with the “Ross carriers”. Brian's singing voice was honed as a teenager when he and another boyhood chum (whose name was also Brian) used to sing along to the “Everly Brothers” (at one point, they sounded identical and could have easily been vocal stand-ins for Don and Phil!) when the three of us used to hang out in Brian and his brother Bob's basement bedroom listening to records and trying to figure out some of the latest rock and roll lyrics, which I'm sure contributed to Brian's excellent song knowledge from that era. Lost touch after high school but the memories have definitely stayed. Godspeed Brian!

Brian was a rare person; scholarship and teaching were both strengths that he shared as a mentor and colleague. He was generous, kind, hard-working and a fabulous colleague. Though I did not meet him until we were both retired from public education, I really enjoyed his contributions to GVRTA and to teacher education at UVIC. We will mis him.

I read of Brian's death with great sadness. Such a thoroughly fine person, and a wonderful colleague. His perspective on people was so deeply generous, compassionate, perceptive, and wise. I can think of no better model of what it means to be a teacher or mentor - or a colleague - than the one unfailingly offered by Brian. He was just the very best; I treasure the good memories I have of working with him.

Although I taught only briefly at Spectrum with Brian, I remember him as being a well liked and respected teacher by both students and staff. His students were fortunate to have a teacher like him as his passion made being in his classroom such a positive learning experience.

Mr. Whitmore was my video arts and theatre production teacher at Spectrum from 96-98. One of the greatest teachers I ever had throughout school. He piqued my interest in tv production and I am now 18 years into a career in television for Global News. He was always there to help and listen if you had a problem. RIP, Mr. Whitmore.

Friends for almost 50 years, at first developing a friendship through our mutual love of music, Brian and I remained close despite my absences from Victoria. Friend and confidante, sometimes acting as my conscience, and I will miss his charm, his wit, his vast knowledge, but most of all his smile and his presence. My life is less for his passing, but what he added to my life I will treasure for my remaining years. I know I'm not alone.

Brian took me to the stacks at the UVic library when I was in grade 12. From that moment I knew I wanted to study English. He was an educator who gave tirelessly of himself to his students and who was in turn energized by their appetite for learning.

As a parent volunteer at Spectrum, I know how deeply respected Brian was to the students, teachers and staff. From my personal experience I know that he was at the core of the musical theatre program, as a priceless mentor, avid supporter and friend. His legacy is great and I know he’ll be fondly missed.

My deepest condolences go to his family. RIP, Brian.
