I was just going through my University og Calgary transcript from 30 years ago, to give a detailed report of my past education for work purposes. A practical and mundane chore. Then my eyes fall on the course EDPS 419 -Communications Skills in Guidance, and immediately a light goes on inside me, and an image of Bryan's big smile, his genuine open, easy going and student friendly attidude, and the glint in his eyes when he told jokes. He was such a great professor and person, that he made university days brighter. And, just thinking about him now makes me feel brighter inside. I am very sorry for you loss. I can imagine you miss him very much.

I met Bryan Hiebert during a difficult time in my life. I felt hopeless and without direction. At that point when I lived in Victoria, and he took me on to help with one of his projects. I remember that his belief in me inspired me to be a better person. I felt quite connected to him, and he was a mentor on how one should live their life. He had a balance of determination and humility, and he never looked down on anyone. He helped me get into graduate school and continued to be an inspiration throughout my life. Its hard to say what he did that affected me so much, other than him showing me love and respect. He was truly one of the biggest influences on my life. I will always think of him in my life.

Hello, I don't need help finding the right words to express my thoughts about Bryan. Dr Hiebert was a smart and insightful leader, a challenge to work with and someone who challenged others. He kept little notes around to remind himself to be nice to people, even when we weren't so smart he worked to be nice. I liked him very much and I think of his mentorship every day. I hope you and your family are well. I am so glad you gave me a break Bryan.

Bryan was a great mentor and colleague at the University of Calgary. He made a big impact through his leadership in the career development field nationally and internationally. I will miss his hearty laugh, vision, and energy to move things forward that he believed in. I am grateful for the support that Bryan provided during my years as a graduate student and as a new professor.

Bryan was a gentle and kind person, whose company was uplifting and affirming. I remember his willingness to share ideas, learn together and serve together. He inspired goodwill in others through his own example. Bryan, you will be remembered and missed.

I am deeply saddened by the loss of career development legend, international influencer, counsellor, colleague and friend Bryan. He was an inspiration to me, and all Australians practitioners, researchers, and policy makers, who respected his ethical commitment to sharing and working together. His presentation Perth in 2000 empowered the model for collaboration for all career associations in Australia to form the Career Industry Council of Australia. His friendship over the years was greatly valued, and his loss will leave a void in our profession. My condolences to his wife and family - I know how much loved he was.

Dear Marilyn and family,

It somehow seems appropriate that I should hear of Bryan's death as I wait in transit in Doha to board a flight. Our relationship was based around our work internationally with IAEVG so our times together almost always involved travel to far flung destinations.
Bryan was my friend. He made me laugh and he made me drink beer (well, he didn't really make me drink beer, but he was great beer drinking company). He challenged me and he affirmed me. We always had fun together. I felt special just being around Bryan and I think many others did too.
Bryan always wanted things to be better, and he worked hard to achieve change in IAEVG. He taught me a lot about courage and even more about humility. Bryan was a true friend to me, and his death leaves a hole.
Marilyn, thank you for sharing Bryan with us. He has made my life and the lives of many others richer in a way that few people can.

Dear Marilyn and Sons,
I was saddened to hear of Bryan's passing. He was my thesis supervisor for both my MSc. and Ph.D at the University of Calgary. I will forever be grateful for his mentorship, support, encouragement, and patience. I greatly appreciated his humor, intelligence and warmth, and often joked with him about his treasured pencils and ties. He always spoke with such pride and love for his family.
My heartfelt condolences to you all.

Dear Marilyn,

I am thinking of you at this time of sadness at Bryan's passing, and wishing you and your family peace and healing. I hope you've had many years of joy in Victoria. I appreciated knowing both of you when you were at the University of Calgary; I enjoyed working with Bryan for the last several years of his tenure in Counselling Psychology. I especially valued how supportive he was of my work, and of our other colleagues, and I learned much from him as an inspiring speaker and an organized leader.

Bryan's professional and academic contribution to global career development systems and policy development is widely acknowledged and respected. His presence in conferences and smaller working group meetings was full of human feeling and friendliness. Bryan worked also with the Finnish guidance community during his visits here and during the IAEVG international conference in 2009. We admired especially his values and strong commitment to the field as well as his skills in creating sustainable partnerships among national and international organisations.

We had the pleasure of being Bryan & Marilyn's neighbour for many years. You couldn't have wished for better people to live beside. Bryan' s smile & personality was infectious. He always had time for you and would always be willing to lend a hand if you needed it. The world is a little bit worse off without him. We will miss him but our memory of him will remain. Our thoughts and prayers are with Marilyn and the rest of the family.

To Marilyn & Sons:
I am so very sorry and saddened to hear of Bryan's passing. I worked with Bryan at the University of Calgary before his retirement, he was the greatest boss, and had a great sense of humor. I remember how proud he was when he brought his little grandson to our office to meet us, you could see that he was just in his absolute glory by the look on his face. I also remember how excited he was to be moving to Victoria, and he sent us pictures of flowers he was planting around his house. It was such a great pleasure to know and work with Bryan, and he is going to be greatly missed.

I know Bryan for many years, having served with him on several Boards and committees in the field of career counselling. What a joy to have private conversations with him when we were traveling to those conferences and meetings. Bryan was a good listener, making you feel you were the most important person at the moment of the conversation, We can easily say that Bryan has 'a style" quite unique.
Thanks Bryan

I consider Dr. Hiebert my first mentor in Career Development. I still recall his challenge of an assumption I made during a discussion on delivery of career development services in rural communities.

Thanks to Bryan for also being such an insightful leader to the early years of Building Tomorrow Today (BTT) the hugely successful regional career development consultations.

My thoughts and condolences to his family.

I was happy to meet and get to know Bryan in conferences and when he was visiting our University of Jyvaskyla in Finland as a visiting expert and lecturer. He always had an encouraging and supportive approach when working with other people and a good sense of humour. I remember how warmly he often talked about his family. We also talked about the beauty of nature so I sometimes sent him my nature photos of peaceful sceneries that he liked. I wish strength and blessings to his whole family and will remember them in my prayers and will also remember the encouragement and support I got from Bryan.

I am shocked & dismayed to learn of Bryan Hiebert's passing. He coauthored a paper with me and a student on social problems in children with learning disabilties. We had always been good colleagues. Bryan and I worked closely together at SFU in the late 1970s and early 1980s. At that time, he and Marilyn were close friends and neighbours in Coquitlam, BC. It was my honour and privilege to co-author one of Bryan's many books--"Instructional Counselling," published in 1985. I am extremely grateful for Bryan's friendship and support. I followed his career as he became one of the leading Canadian counselling and career psychologists of his generation. I loved and respected him as a friend and colleague.

I am so sad today. Although Bryan had been ill for quite awhile, it was always such a bonus to reconnect and see him doing better at times. I learned much from the opportunities that I had to work with, for, and alongside Bryan and those lessons will stay with me. In a conference workshop a couple of years ago, Bryan and I were partnered for the typical type of role-playing practice that counsellor educators are always asking their students to do. After only moments of being the client, I recall thinking, How wonderful it would be to be counselled by Bryan. What a loss not to have his wisdom and counsel at the end of an email or phone call. However, how wonderful that his legacy can and will live on through countless students and colleagues. Of course, the biggest loss is to his family. Bryan spoke with SUCH love for each of you . . . my heart is with you today and in the days and years - ahead.

Bryan was a professor and my thesis supervisor for my MA (at Simon Fraser University) and for my PhD (at University of Calgary). I considered him a friend. As a mentor, he was one of the people who contributed significantly to my development as a professional and helped me develop a career I love. While students mainly noticed his clarity, rigour, and directness (you always knew where you stood), he was always on the lookout for opportunities for people whom he mentored.

There are many people in Alberta, across Canada, and throughout the world who have been helped by Bryan's contributions to school counselling, career development, and counselling psychology.

Bryan was a professor and my thesis supervisor both my MA (at SFU) and PhD (at U of C). I considered him a friend. He was one of the handful of people I count as a mentor and who helped me get on a career path I've loved. Besides his rigour, realism, and directness, he was always on the lookout for opportunities for people he knew and had worked with.

I was honoured when, about a year ago, he agreed to review a paper for the school counselling journal he used to edit, and which I now edit. He was not feeling well physically and thought it might take him a while. Then he sent it back days later, telling me, "I had a burst of energy. Here it is," with his usual rigour and thoroughness.

I know many in Alberta, across the country, and throughout the world have been influenced for the better by Bryan's contributions in school counselling, career development, and counselling psychology.

Bryan was one of a kind in so many ways. True to his principles and clear about his principles, he lived his life with an integrity that is rarely seen. As an occasional project colleague, fellow Board member at times, and career-long career development colleague, I learned (or tried to learn) many, many things from Bryan, such as how to chair a meeting, how to align word and deed, how to keep going when a project was hitting bumps and how to keep living life even in pain and discomfort (which Bryan did better than anyone).
